``If every team spent to the $49 million ... total player compensation would exceed what we spent last season,'' NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in his second letter of the day to NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow. ``We cannot afford your proposal.''
The owners explanation...

``Clubs are spending significantly less than your team payroll limit number of $42.5 million,'' Goodenow said in his second letter. ``I am at a loss to understand how you suggest your offer earlier today represents a $75 million dollar increase when it only impacts the spending of nine teams!''
The players take.........

``This offer is not an invitation to begin negotiations -- it's too late for that,'' Bettman said. ``This is our last effort to make a deal that's fair to the players and one that the clubs (hopefully) can afford. We have no more flexibility and there is no time for further negotiation.''
ouch....

This year's season will not happen.

-----
"As I stand before you today, it is my sad duty to announce ... it no longer is practical to conduct even an abbreviated season," commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Accordingly, I have no choice but to announce the formal cancellation of play for 2004-05."

"This is a sad, regrettable day that all of us wish could have been avoided," he said.

Bettman said the sides would continue working to get an agreement.

"We're planning to have hockey next season," he said.

I don't follow hockey at all, but it's sad to see any sport cancel a season.

Fuck all pro sports strikes. I don't even want to fucking hear how players are getting screwed, when they're getting paid millions of dollars to play a fucking game they've loved all their life. It's like complaining the you're only getting two millions dollars a year to fuck Mimi Miyagi, Jeanna Jamieson, and other porno fuck-bunnies. Go fucking whine to someone who actually gives a shit.

Mili,

I see that you are a connoisseur of porn.

Good comparison by the way.

These guys think they have it so tough. I wish my main problem was deciding what color leather I want inside my Benz.

My question is, what's the minimum cap on the table?

I mean... In the NFL there's a pretty small difference... like 9 million bucks... (Which out of say 72 or 80 million is not a lot...)

But if the minimum is 30 mill.. then it can be a combination of intelligent spending and cost control... unless the ownership is counting on redistributing the profits of the higher revenue teams.

If I am not mistaken the minimum I read somewhere was $25 million. This also includes the %% rollback the Players offered.

What I find interesting is the Players insistence that the salary cap is not tied to the Revenue the league brings in. Sounds like they don't think the league can make any more money so trying to squeeze blood from a rock. But I will laugh my ass off if they sign a 6 year deal and in the 4th-5th year hockey is healed and the revenue is skyrocketing I wonder if the players will strike to try to get a revenue linked salary cap?

Oh well, I just hope the players fire their lead negotiator because they should have gotten to this point (ie $6 million dollars apart) about a month or so ago. Stubborness by their leadership to deal is what caused this.

I just hope now we get some real action this summer. I want to see teams fold, the NHL contracting and that becoming a bargaining chip for the season to start next year, and then rule changes, and then on top of all that rumors of an XHL being formed by Vince McMahon. :banger:
