New question, getting new cabinets.

The previous owner put 3/4 inch hardwood over top of linoleum that was on top of Luan.

My only way to build previous cabinet footprints up to level with hardwood is putting down 3/8 plywood followed by pieces of leftover hardwood that previous owner left us.

My question is, can I just put the hardwood pieces around the perimeter of the old footprint and leave the middle of the footprint empty of hardwood since the cabinets will just rest on the edges of the footprint?

Sounds logical (I've done that before) but might be more work.. altho more expensive if you use full sheets
I was able to do entire kitchen with one sheet of 3/8 plywood cut into appropriate sized pieces and had existing hardwood pieces to cob in place.

I may put one runner piece right through the middle of each footprint to account for the weight of the quartz countertop.

I've been without a handrail on my stairs ever since I moved into my house. My problem is that I'm having trouble finding the studs to anchor the handrail into b/c the wall is lath and plaster so a stud finder doesn't work. I've tried tapping the wall to find the studs but no luck, also tried finding where the trim is nailed to the wall hoping it's nailed into the studs but no luck there as well.

Any help would be appreciated.
With older construction (and usually better, I might add) this is a problem. Finding the first stud is the key then doing the math to find the others. I have had issues before, but plaster definitely creates issues. I hope you can make it work
