Hooters Air begins flights from metro Chicago airport

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Hooters Air of America started service from Gary/Chicago International Airport to Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Thursday. (Related item:Photo gallery)

Hooters Air President Mark Peterson said Hooters decided to begin service to the Gary airport because it was so difficult for an airline to obtain gate space at Midway or O'Hare International airports in Chicago. So offering service out of Gary represents a logical step for an airline looking to expand its market share, he said.

Peterson is so confident of success from the Gary airport, he said another destination might be announced as early as July.

Hooter's inaugural Gary-to-Myrtle Beach flight was nearly 80% full, reported The Times of Munster, Ind., which said there were 103 passengers on Hooters' 132-seat Boeing 737. In addition to a standard crew of pilots and flight attendants, each Hooters flight is staffed with a least two "Hooters Girls" waitresses.

Gary/Chicago International Airport has been trying to position itself as a third airport for the Chicago metropolitan area.

Two commercial airlines now operate out of Gary, provide the airport with more momentum to grow, airport Administrator Paul Karas said.

Southeast Airlines flies out of Gary to St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport in Florida six days a week and to Sanford International Airport near Orlando, five days a week.

Cynthia Pruitt, acting director of Indiana's Department of Commerce, said she believed the fact two airlines now serve Gary would advance the initiative to expand its primary runway and economic development opportunities in northwestern Indiana.

getting southeast and Hooters isn't exactly a great first step... I wouldn't be too happy until one of the major airlines stepped in... those two major airlines might have 8 flights a week that leave the airport (and prob. 8 that come in too)... sure, good start but nothing that will generate big $$ or big interest in passengers.

I flew Southeast this summer to Tampa and there was a Hooters terminal. If I have to fly to Myrtle Beach from C-Bus that's how I'm getting there. Richenbacher (sp) is a nice little airport.
