Williams' improvement shows
Right-hander gives convincing start for rotation consideration
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Managers never want to put their veteran pitchers in do-or-die situations, but Sunday's Astros game with the Braves was undoubtedly a last ditch effort for Woody Williams. The scenario was spelled out in simple terms by manager Cecil Cooper, even if he tried to soften the severity of the message. Williams needed to perform well on Sunday in order to merit pitching in his final spring game this weekend in Houston. If he pitched poorly, he was guaranteed nothing.

Ausmus to be emergency infielder
Backup catcher to add extra duties away from home plate
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Brad Ausmus is most comfortable crouching behind the plate, but he's also a fixture on the field as one of many "infielders" taking grounders during batting practice. Ausmus enjoys fielding grounders with his teammates, something he's done regularly since A-ball. But he's been taking grounders with more frequency lately, and for good reason. In addition to backup catching duties, Ausmus will be considered an "emergency infielder" for the Astros this season.

Cooper unhappy with fundamentals
Plans to work on pickoffs and rundowns after miscues
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Pickoffs and rundowns are usually practiced early in the spring, but Astros players may find themselves spending the morning of their final Spring Training home game on Wednesday going over those basic fundamentals. After what Cecil Cooper witnessed during his team's 10-9 loss to the Tigers in Lakeland on Tuesday night, the skipper apparently feels a refresher course is in order.

Astros' offense only comes up with one run on Tuesday
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- The Astros had no problem producing baserunners against the Padres on Tuesday night, but pushing them across the finish line was another story. The Astros stranded 11 and fell to the Padres for the second straight night, 2-1, before a sparse crowd of 20,825 on a breezy, chilly night at PETCO Park.
