Houston Texans (official thread)

Deshaun Watson needs a diaper change, Super Bowl-winning head coach says

Super Bowl-winning head coach Dick Vermeil wasn’t having any of it. He told TMZ Sports on Wednesday that Watson was being a baby.

"I think they change his diapers, OK?" Vermeil said of what the Texans should do moving forward. "Nowhere in his contract does it say that he's involved in making the decisions of who coaches or who leads the organization."

He added: "He's a great NFL football player and always has been a great kid, but I think he just shuts his mouth and becomes a better football player and lead the football team and let the leaders of the organization lead him."
.
.
.
Watson signed a four-year, $156 million contract extension at the beginning of September. He is due to make $10.5 million in 2021 and then $35 million in 2022. He has a potential out after the 2023 season.

Come on Deshaun, don't become the NFL version of Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

Texans apparently to hire Ratbirds assistant David Culley as their new HC. If you’re saying “who?”, you’re not alone. He’s a 65 year old first time head coach who hasn’t even been a coordinator since 1990 at...UTEP. I don’t recall ever seeing his name mentioned as a HC candidate...ever. His Wikipedia page is three short paragraphs in length.

Houston is a goddamned dumpster fire.

It reminds me of the Niners Tomsula hire post-Harbrau. A coach nobody thinks should be a HC, but hired because his predecessor was such an asshole, they had to make a hire they thought would please everybody. And that guy is a career position coach whose players love him, but nobody else thinks he should be a HC. I'm sure it'll work this time, though.

and as expected did nothing to keep their generational QB happy

Just sayin': In reality maybe they could. I'm guessing that Shahid Khan would trade the #1 pick for Deshaun Watson (i.e. a proven bonified 25 year old NFL franchise QB). The obstacle might be Watson agreeing to the trade though.
Probably not that black and white. In a vacuum, it makes sense. But, the Jags are rebuilding. Lawrence is considered a once a decade prospect at the position and they can get him on a rookie deal. Watson has a 4 yr/$156M contract. Makes more sense in their position to go with the rookie.

In the NFL a rookie QB is never a "sure thing". Want me to list some QBs who went early in the 1st round that never panned out?

Tim Couch
Ryan Leaf
JaMarcus Russell
Art Schlichter
Heath Schuler
Rick Mirer
Andre Ware
Akili Smith
Todd Blackledge
David Klingler
Jerry Tagge
Mike Phipps
Vince Young
Jeff George
Kerry Collins
and the list could go on and on.

Well, you're definitely right there. There's no such thing as a "sure thing." However, most teams starting a full rebuild don't invest $30M/year in a QB. That's reserved for teams in "win now" mode.
