How many others have competed in triathlons, marathons, etc ?

Completed my first Ironman today. Absolutely amazing experience.

SWEET! Nice job. Times?

Truth be known, I have done 10 IM's, Kona 2x and probably run 50+ marathons. Done some adventure racing and a bunch of mountain biking.

Yea, I know...no life.

14:22 overall. I was aiming for 14, but the bike course was WAY tougher than anything I've ever ridden. Throw in a nice headwind on the only downhill section of the course, and it was what it was. That said, I will absolutely take a finish! Heard of a bunch of people missing the first loop bike cutoff and others pulled from the run course with hypothermia from the rain and cold.

1:23 swim - Was on pace to break 1:20 with a 39 minute first lap, but second loop got very choppy with the wind, and my sighting wasn't great.
7:34 bike - Definitely my weak spot, but was glad to just get through those hills.
5:00 run - A little slow for me, but I was just sort of enjoying myself out there once I realized I wouldn't break 14 hours.

Nice! Congrats man, now you can get the M Dot tat. I have been to CDL twice and that swim is a BITCH if the wind comes up. That is the way to do it, take your time and soak it up. Not much sense killing yourself to brake 14. Better to wave to the crowd like a rock star.

OK next question, what was your nutrition plan? If INFINIT was not part of it, then I take all the nice things I just said you freeken looser.

Seriously, let me know if I can help. I have been known to hook up BP members on occasion.

Haha...sadly, I was not on INFINIT for the race, but it was more because of me being too petrified to try ANYTHING new in the months before the race than anything else.

I went with bars+gatorade on the bike and gels+gatorade/water/broth/coke on the run. I planned to have a second bento box back by my seat for all the bars, but it ended up not fitting right, so I had to start with 4 bars, then stop at special needs and pick up the other 4. It worked well for my stomach, but it definitely would have been nice not to have to mess with all of that. And hey, if you feel like hooking me up, I'd be happy to try it out for whatever is next on the schedule. :)

That said, I can testify that it does work. I have a friend who used INFINIT for her bike there, and she went 10:49 overall and placed 2nd in her age group. (Missed winning by only 41 seconds!)

First of all, a hearty congratulations! I've heard that Coeur d'Alene is tough.

One of our training group members did CDL also (she got the CDL slot at this past Honu 70.3). She did the first swim loop at just over 40 minutes, but took 48 to do the second loop...the chops would explain the slowdown. And although she had a 4:47 run, she ran the last four miles or so at a 14-minute pace, so I guess the wind, rain, and cold was getting to her, too. Sounds like it was a bitch of a race.

I've signed up for Ironman Western Austraila, which is on Dec 5th. It's supposedly the easiest IM out of all the official IM events, so that's why I picked it for my first full IM. Both the bike and run courses are completely flat and the swim is in a protected bay which is usually glassy in the early morning (and it's a wetsuit swim). Weather is supposed to be good, albeit hot, at that time of year. My goal time-wise is to break 13 hours, but in reality I just want to finish it.

Thanks! I chose it for the chance of cool weather, and certainly got my wish there and more. It's a beautiful course, but yes, it was challenging!

Heard someone afterward say 3' chop (don't know if that is accurate) and it was directly in your face going out. That's almost certainly what slowed her down.

Those last four miles of the run were also a slight uphill - gradual enough you wouldn't notice it if you weren't at mile 136 of a race, but it was evident at that point. :) My last 4 miles were around 15:00's after averaging 10:00's for the first 22 miles. Most people around me near the end were running (well, mostly walking) in mylar blankets they were handing out along the course.

Did the Ironman Western Australia last Dec 5th (full ironman), and just did the Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, aka Honu, a week ago yesterday. To see what swimmers have to go through at turn bouys, checkout this video taken the first turn bouy by one of our club's top triathletes from a depth of about 40 feet. Skip to around the 2:00 mark, and especially check out the 4:00-ish mark. This is what happens when you have 1,600 swimmers start en-masse. Fucking wild...

Congrats on the Honu finish! I did Kansas 70.3 the same weekend. Saw someone who did Honu comment that we had the same weather, just lava fields for you and corn fields for us! It was 95 the day before, but "cooled down" to 86 on race day.

It was a PR for me, but still slower than anticipated after I melted down on the run. I was really hoping to break 6 hours, but it wasn't to be this time. And to rub it in, my wife crushed me by 25 minutes.

Now it's all about prepping for Rev3 Cedar Point iron distance in September!

My aim-high goal was 6:30, with an actual target of breaking 7:00. The winds had kicked up the day prior and by race start we had some pretty serious wind chop out past the second turn bouy which took you back across the mouth of the bay for about 1000 meters. I was looking at breaking 50 minutes for the swim (not a good swimmer at all) but ended up taking 1:09 and getting completely gassed. That cost me about a half hour on the bike leg (took 3:43 vice my expected time of 3:15...the climb up to Havi killed me). By the time I got out of T2 it was already 5:12 into the race and I just said "Fuck it, I'm jog-walking", and finished at 8:15.

Oh yeah, I had a blistering T1 time of 13 minutes. :slappy: After the swim exit run across the beach up a short, steep hill into the bike pen, I couldn't get my compression socks on because my feet were just damp enough to keep them from going on. It took me almost 3 minutes each to put on...if I could tolerate biking/running without socks I would have. Note to self, next time just wear the compression calf sleeves instead. :smash:
