This morning began with a conversation with a coworker. I've done my best to paraphrase below:

CoWorker: Oh man, can't wait till lunch! I'm running out and grabbing the new Vampire Weekend album
BigWoof: Who are they?

CW: Seriously!? You don't know?
BW: no. Should I?

CW: Ohmygod they are amazing. They're sound is awesome and they could be a once in a generation band!
BW: Oh, what radio station would I find their songs?

CW: Well - they're not really on the radio.
BW: Oh. Then who are they like?

CW: Kinda like The Shins or Wilco or even Bright Eyes before they got too mainstream.
BW: *cricket noises*
CW: YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE?
BW: No. Should I?

CW: DUDE! You're 28! How can you not know these things?
BW: Because who really cares? You've spent money on a band I'm sure you'll be sick of in 8-12 months anyway?

Now - Am I right that music is ultimately cyclical and paying too much attention to it is pointless. Or is he right that I'm acting like a senior citizen and not really "into the scene"
I've found that most indie people are douchebags.

I'd rather Georgia stop playing football than listen to this band.
These guys are the gayest, most awful band I have had the misfortune of hearing in a long time. I caught one of their performances for a couple of songs on some MTV2 show, and their stuff literally sounded like they were playing w/ Fisher Price instruments.

However, I must highly recommend Ryan Bingham to the board-real, West Texas shitkicker country-no Nashville BS. Check out "Southside of Heaven" or "Bread and Water" or "The Weary Kind"(from the new Jeff Bridges movie Crazy Heart.) If you like Willie,Waylon, or North Mississippi All Stars-you will like this dude. He'd kick Vampire Weekend's collective ass w/ both hands tied behind his back.

Mainstream music [censored]ing sucks, for the most part.

I hate to be that guy, but in this situation I'm going to be that guy.

EDIT: I now realize that what I said doesn't really relate to what you said. But there is a lot of good music that's not popular. A lot.
Most Top 40 stuff on the radio does suck, but that is a result of the style, production, etc. To me "indie rock" signifies a specific type of sound, and attitude that I can't stand. I love The Raveonettes(Ricky Nelson meets Jesus and Mary Chain, w/ a hot chick) or Manic Street Preachers-British, neither of which are big in the US, but I wouldn't consider them "indie rock"-they don't sound like hipster bands,IMO.

Spoon's new album came out today. It's consistently good but not great. For me "Got Nuffin" is the only song that approaches the highest points of the last two discs.

I've had this album for some time so I've had a chance to fully digest. This album gets better and better with each listen. While I still prefer "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" and "Kill the Moonlight", this one is right behind.

Pitchfork: Vampire Weekend Hit Number One

Billboard reports that Vampire Weekend's Best New Music album Contra has sold 124,000 copies in its first week, making it the highest selling album in the country. Contra debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 today, beating out the likes of Susan Boyle (number two), Lady Gaga (number four), Taylor Swift (number eight), and the Black Eyed Peas (number ten).

According to Billboard, Contra, which was released by XL, is only the 12th independently distributed title to hit number one since 1991, when SoundScan started tracking sales.

Next stop, the Grammys! Congratulations mainstream listeners - they belong to you now.

I don't like Indie music because the people who listen to it are so pretentious about it. The irony is that they assume some sort of creative superiority or originality while the only reason they probably listen to it is because it is "hip" to do. All the indie bands look the same and play the same bland music. That's why they're not successful. That's why they don't have a major label. No band would be indie if they had been offered something better. That's why there is a band called Vampire Weekend that most of us have never heard of. They prey off of the same demographic of people who were cloned to follow the Twilight Saga and in the midst of this mainstream-vampire-obsession they created a fad-band for these people to follow. Indie culture is drawn out from mainstream pop culture- not the other way around.

EDIT: Just to prove my point, Vampire Weekend is classified as an "Indie Pop" band. What the hell is "Indie Pop"? Oxymoron if I ever saw one.
