I Miss/Remember When... (Merged)

THINK, Before You Speak
Former College Pick'Em Champ
Inspired by Tim McGraw's hit song, things I miss about sports when I was a kid as opposed to today. Feel free to add your own.

"Roids" were just something that made it painful as hell to sit down.
"Suzuki" was a motorcycle.
"Matsui" was a PSU RB, and later blocking back for Walter Payton.
Walter Payton.
"LBJ" was our President, not a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The "Twin Towers" were thriving in Houston, not crumbling in NYC.
"OSU" meant ONLY Ohio State.
"USC" meant ONLY Southern Cal.
Dick Weber and Earl Anthony were "Pro-Bowlers." NFL All-Stars were not.
Coach Wayne Woodrow Hayes.
"Petey's #1 Guy" was whichever "Little Rascal" member was petting him.

I miss....
...Howard Cosell doing halftime highlights on MNF
...Dick Enberg and Merlin Olson doing games on NBC
...Paul Brown roaming the sidelines with that old-school fedora
...being a student at OSU and being able to buy a season ticket for $42
...watching the Big Red Machine, especially Joe Morgan
...listening to the fans boo Pete Rose when the Reds played on the road
...listening to Marty and Joe do the games back when Joe was somewhat coherent

I miss.....

when MLB, the NFL, the NHL, and the NBA did not have strikes, unions, free agency, or salary caps.

when professional sports were more of a "sport" and less of a business.

when trades or "cuts" were made based on the talent of the player and not his salary.

when your favorite player on your favorite team spent his entire career on that team.

when you did not have to take out a 2nd mortgage on your house so you could afford to take your family to a game.

when "the team" was more important then any "individual".

I miss a functional Keith Jackson.

I miss a coherent John Madden.

I miss watching games without little boxes on every corner of the TV screen.

I miss the time when ESPN was actually about sports, not entertainment.

I miss when
Georgetown basketball was actually good, and the #1 coolest program in the country

Nebraska ground teams into the dirt w/ the option

James Brooks was the baddest RB in the NFL, and not a punchline for dumb player jokes

The Bengals and the Oilers had a real rivalry w/ Sam Wyche and Jerry Glanville

I actually cared about the Reds

Arkansas had 40 Minutes of Hell every night

--a time when agents were not famous
--players were actually loyal to fans and teams
--routine ground or flyballs were run out
--minor injuries did not equal DL
--players were at least role models in the public eye

couldn't agree more, you really hit the nail on the head with the last one. i can remember getting up every morning and watching sports-center for 20 minutes and knowing what happened in sports the day before, now you watch for 20 minutes and you know the score of 1 game, but you also know that kenny mayne got eliminated from dancing with the stars.

osugrad,
do you think that players should be role models? This idea that players now are "worse" than before I think is a fallacy. It's just that back then the media didn't report on the off the field behavior. Do you think Micky Mantle with his drinking should be a role model? Heck, today, his behavior might have been exposed and maybe he would have gotten help in time.

No, I definitely agree that the media protected these guys...no doubt about it. However, knowing that they have such a tremendous impact on the country's youth, these guys should at least be making better choices in the public eye. The media has done a complete 180 from MM's days...they protected him while today's media actually digs to make the guys look bad.

Yes, I do feel they should be role models and should be held to higher standards. I realize there is a duality in my opinion with the media influence, but when you are paid so much money for such a trivial job, one should be expected to appreciate that opportunity more and behave accordingly.
