IA DB Xavier Nwankpa (Iowa Verbal)

** Three-horse race for Nwankpa … One of our best talent evaluators saw Steve Wiltfong’s update from The Opening on Iowa 2022 safety Xavier Nwankpa. In the article, Nwankpa – ranked the nation’s No. 13 overall prospect and No. 1 safety, according to 247Sports.com – said he enjoyed recent visits to Ohio State, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.

Here were some of our guy’s comments on Nwankpa:

“If Ohio State stays with the one high safety look on defense, Nwankpa is definitely the guy they want,” he said. “He is 6-2 and 190 pounds. He has good length and is a rangy player. He is a physical player who can be effective in blitz packages. Plus, there is no real conflict with (2023 star) Sonny Styles, who I believe will be playing outside linebacker most likely at the college level.

“And it would open up the state of Iowa, which is somewhat underrated for high school football talent. I can’t remember when or if Ohio State has had a kid from Iowa in the last 20 or 30 years.”

By all accounts, Nwankpa plans more visits this fall and would then likely sign with his school of choice in December.

As Bucknutters are well aware, Ohio State Class of 2022 safety Zion Branch high on their board. At least one source has told us Branch actually tops the board at the position.

LJB, going to see the 'atmosphere' of the games shoud be a strength for tOSU, IMHO. Wiltfong is usually pretty conservative about his projections. Not certain that Iowa won't put on a push, or the Domers will bring out all their big guns. By the way, agree with ScriptOhio, Ahia has sent more talent to Iowa than Iowa has reciprocated to tOSU......Lachey being the latest one. go Bucks! PS, Seems that the kid from Nevada is 'leaning' more toward USC than the good guys - at least from what I've read - I simply do not have any personal knowledge. But if Nwankpa is being 'promised' he'd be perfect for the bullet, there seems to be 3-5 other players penciled in for that spot....

Most important player left on our board imo, although I would entertain the idea that OL is the most pressing need. But I think this kid would be a game-changing safety for us and after last season, we saw how important that is. I feel good about the CB even with the Singletary decommitment, but we need a big time safety in this class and Xavier is the guy. I like Branch about as much but I feel like that one is trending away some.
