Illinois - Carolina, NCAA Final

I just tune in to hear Billy Packer. He's great. A team can be down by 12 points, and he'll say something really good like "they can't trade baskets with the other team." He really brings a lot to the table.

The funny thing is that when Packer said that there was 17 minutes left in the game. Hmm...couldn't Illinois trade baskets for 10 minutes and then go on their run? :roll1:

Now it is perfect screening by the Illini...just a minute ago they were illegal. I guess your perspective changes once you know your team is going to win. Illini showed great heart in coming back, but NC was just too tough tonight.

Bogut's way too big for May.

Damn it i needed Illinois to win so i could break even overall with my tourny pools...... oh well im glad to say Roy get his title, and i can't say anything bad against UNC. I really did like Illinois but what can you do...?

I've never liked Head, and he was a big part of the problem down the stretch. He should NOT have been handling the ball on that turnover, he makes those mistakes occasionally when he dons the PG hat.

If there is any consolation, SilkyIsBack/MichiganRules posted over on the ESPN board that he would have won $50K had Illinois won. :)

I think it will be a matter of style. If Illinois tries to outrun UNC like MSU did, they won't be able to win. Also, I don't think they'll be able to just sit back and shoot 3s the whole game like they did against Louisville's zone either. Lastly, they've gotta find some way to contain May. That's my 3 keys for the game.

Well, 2 of 3 ain't bad. 12 of 40 from beyond the arc is just not right. For a team with such explosive guards, they never even tried to penetrate into the paint. Illini had no response for May. Augustine fouled out in under 9 minutes trying to guard him and none of the other guys (except Powell in his limited action defending May) could hold their ground.

They had no business driving inside on a regular basis. They had much less size overall than MSU, and look what happened to them. UNC made them beat them with the 3, and it almost backfired. That 15 pt lead was barely enough to hold on.

I'm still impressed with Illinois ability to come back. They were done against Arizona and fairly out of it against UNC, yet they tied up both games. If Deron Williams has his hands on the ball on that 2nd to last possession of Illinois' rather than head I bet they score and put a lot more pressure on the FT shooter. Instead Head chokes twice and Illinois loses.

While it would have been nice to have been their only loss, we should still be proud of being their first of two... and we should be proud of the BigTen. The only team who could handle our three best tourney teams was the eventual champion.

Maybe not driving in on a regular basis, but in the second half, I can probably count on one hand how many times they did. This was a team averaging 22 3-point attempts per game. They shot 40. That's twice as many attempts, which means they were taken out of their normal gameplan and just sat back and launched 3s. You gotta at least drive somewhat consistently to keep the defense honest.
