Illinois - Carolina, NCAA Final

Augustine (who is remarkably overrated) lost this game for them. While some of the fouls were touch fouls, he needed to be available not as a starter but as a reserve for Ingram. That would have allowed Ingram more latitude in terms of staying on the floor after his 4th foul. When he had to sit I think that had a big impact on the game.

I just don't think they match up well with UNC. They couldn't handle dials, and may is a better version of the same type of center. And then they have freakishly tall and athletic guys inside.

I think they game planned well personally. They missed a lot of open looks in the first half that on most days would have won the game for them.

I'm gonna have to disagree BFS, Illinois got out schemed and out coached by a chump in roy williams. Weber is an idiot. He was jumping up and down like a clown all game in that reee-diculous orange jacket. The illini game plan was atrocious. They HAD to do something to take May out of the game, because there was no way they were going to win with him playing with the confidence he was playing with for the past two weekends. Did they honestly think they could beat carolina if EVERY time the ball got in to May, he was either going to go to the line or get a bucket? When they were making their runs to get back in the game they were pushing the ball, getting down the floor, whipping it around and getting off a shot, they had may too gassed to do much on offense. Roy Williams managed his bench perfectly by giving May a few breathers in the first half and letting Felton rest up when he got a couple quick fouls ... not try to get him back in the game too quick. Then he put him back in towards the end of the half, and he shook a tired Dee Brown for a couple threes that spread the carolina lead to double digits. Weber got out coached. Period. Williams finally got lucky enough to run into a complete putz in the championship game so that he could finally get his title. Really, it's a testament to the character of the illini players that they were able to hang in there and come back after getting down that big, but that's it.

I guess the question is, what could they have done? Who is big enough to handle May? And the few times they did double down on him it resulted in open looks that were nailed by UNC's excellent shooters. How do you gameplan for something you can't stop?

Illinois is getting jobbed by the officiating. To back that up they are not attacking on offense and UNC is getting to the basket. Unless there is a huge turnaround UNC is going to win this one by about 15.
As much I hate to admit it, Packer was totally correct on all of the moving screens that Illinois was setting. If anyone had room to complain, it was Carolina.
