Well to be fair, since ThaKid first began his impressive predictions of "Miami-esque" recruiting classes, much has changed with in the world CFB. I would argue that it would not take very much for Illinois recruiting class to be in the neighborhood of Miami's. It turns out that he truly was a fantastic prognosticator, we just didn't understand what it meant at the time.

Re: Illinois OKs six-year, $21 million contract for Lovie Smith

Just sayin': Lovie has 21 million reasons to not regret taking the Illinois job. Keep in mind, the cupboard was bare when Lovie got there, he is a pretty good coach, give him 3 or 4 years to get "his players" in place, who knows?, maybe he can turn the program around.

That's the scout ranking, AT THEIR POSITION, nationally of the Illini's 12 commits. In big time cfb, the "Jimmy's and Joe's" matter. Lovie's gonna have.to do a whole lot better than that. Entering the stretch run for the class of 2017, Illinois has not received the recruiting bump most of them anticipated by hiring a "name" coach. They're hauling in the same MAC-level recruits they have been for the last 7-8 years that have got them here.

    Dead program.

I guess the good news for Illinois is that they are still ahead of Indiana, Minnesota, and Purdue.....

Scout's ranking of the B1G's 2017 recruiting class (overall rank/school/#commitments)
    2. Ohio State 17
    10. Michigan 16
    15. Maryland 18
    19. Michigan State 16
    22. Nebraska 15
    24. Penn State 14
    25. Iowa 17
    27. Northwestern 16
    28 .Rutgers 20
    48. Wisconsin 10
    51. Illinois 12
    54. Indiana 14
    57. Minnesota 12
    70. Purdue 12

    In case you wondered:
    1. Oklahoma 22
    3. Alabama 21

The best news is that Ohio State has the highest star rating (i.e. 4.24) and with a couple more commitments will easily pass Oklahoma.

Lovie Smith responds to report he’s ‘miserable’ at Illinois, could be one-and-done in Champaign

According to an ESPN.com report that cites “several industry sources,” “Smith is miserable in Champaign.” So much so, in fact, that the NFL lifer may be one-and-done at the collegiate level.

While the same report goes on to cite other sources who see Smith as coming back, it’s the potential departure after one year — and the use of the word “miserable” — that’s gotten the most traction. At a previously-scheduled Monday press conference, as well as on Twitter later that day, Smith looked to tamp out the fire before it really gets going and damages him on the all-important recruiting trail.

    From CSNChicago.com:

Am I happy right now with where we are? No, no one on our football team is happy with where we are right now,” Smith said. “My time in Champaign, it’s a little bit bigger than where we are right now. Our football team, we’re going to win a lot of games eventually, and there’s not much more than that. As I said after the game Saturday, not many of us should be happy with where we’re at right now, but we’re going to do something to fix it together here.

“I would not get into speculation at all,” Smith said when directly asked about the whole “one-and-done” phrasing. “You’re hearing it from me. I would go on what you’re getting from me right now.

MaryAnne and I are incredibly happy in Champaign. We love this University and this community.

We look forward to working together to build Illinois Football into a championship program! #WeWillWin #Illini

Well, he dodged the "one and done" question like a seasoned politician, it was obvious that he didn't come out and deny he was "one and done". My guess is now that if something better comes along especially in the NFL, "he's out of there". Hey under the Rooney Rule he could very easily get some interviews (as he is an African American); however, I don't believe that any NFL team is likely to offer him more than he is making at Illinois. He had a marginal winning record with the Bears, but a miserable record (his last 2 years in the NFL) with the Buccaneers.
