University of Illinois junior football player Bobby Roundtree suffered a severe spinal injury Saturday in a swimming accident near his home of Largo, Florida. Surgeons at Mease Countryside Hospital, Safety Harbor, Florida, where Roundtree is recovering, performed surgery Sunday night. No additional information is available at this time.

“Bobby Roundtree is exactly what you want in a student-athlete,” said Head Coach Lovie Smith. “He is a hard worker, dependable, a dedicated student and a leader. This is devastating to his teammates, the entire Fighting Illini family and his family and friends. We will give Bobby all the support possible as he battles through his recovery. Please keep Bobby and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Roundtree started 20 of 24 games during his first two seasons at Illinois, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in 2018. He was projected as one of the Illini’s top players entering his junior season in 2019. Smith, several Illini coaches, along with many family members and friends, gathered at the hospital over the weekend in support of Roundtree.

One of my best friends in high school became a quadriplegic because of a swimming (diving) accident. Horrible news for Roundtree. Hoping for a full recovery but swimming accident and severe spinal injury is very bad news.

NCAA denies Illinois TE Luke Ford’s transfer appeal, will sit out 2019 season

There was a prevailing thought that the NCAA was approving waivers and appeals like candy this year after players like Tate Martell (from Ohio State to Miami) and Justin Fields (from Georgia to Ohio State) were allowed to play right away at their new school but that is not the case across the board.

Illinois tight end Luke Ford learned that the hard way on Friday as the school confirmed that the NCAA had denied his waiver request after he moved from Georgia to Champaign to be closer to his ailing grandfather.

“The NCAA based the decision on guidelines used during the original decision. No further appeal is available, and the decision is final and binding,” Illinois said in a release.

Ford will now have to sit out all of 2019 after arriving from the Bulldogs, where he committed to as the top player in the state of Illinois last year. He initially appealed to be eligible right away but was denied back in April by the NCAA.

High-powered lawyer Thomas Mars was eventually retained by Ford’s family to help with the latest appeal but it seems as though it didn’t do much good for the folks in Indianapolis. It turns out actually having a good reason for transferring other than playing time is not good enough for some players nowadays, sadly.

Ive seen the 'sick family' thing many times... not sure i buy it. Id put skillful lawyer excuses somewhere between the two the author indirectly complains about.

Nope, that's just the smell of a team that will be lucky to end up anywhere but the B1G cellar.

Yeah but who the hell wants to play football at Illinois. Especially if you're talented.

Hell if I know. Could ask the same of LB that transferred from Clemson to Maryland.
Overwhelming majority of transfers are about depth charts or coaching personnel... more often than not, this means a step down in competition level.
