Illinois Fighting Illini (you'll see)

I gotta go with Chow on this one. He is once again one of the highest rated coordinators in the nation. Also, they can return a powerful offense to UF, but one that would be a little more balanced than the old Fun and Gun. Think of the recruiting base he would have in FL.

I thought chow was mentioned in years past for some high profile jobs but always declined b/c he was content at USC? didn't he leave ncst to go back to the west coast? or am i dreaming something else?

Chow would be scary with all of that FL talent on his roster - but can he be as good of a HC as he is an OC?

Not saying he couldn't do it - just that there would be a lot more hats he would have to wear.

He would seem to be one of the lowest risk candidates out there.

I thought he was a finalist last year for Arizona (don't remember which one) that they ultimately hired one of the Stoops for. I don't remember hearing he yanked his own name, just that Stoops received it.

Hummm ... I think it's a timing issue. This gives them time to talk to other coaches (behind the scenes) WELL before the end of the season, WELL before recruiting begins post season, WELL before coaches are re-uping their contracts, etc. It also gives them a built-in scape goat for the rest of the year. Now, why would Zook agree to that scenario is strange.
The reason Zook agreed to it is that he is a dumb ass.

isn't Charlie Strong UF's defensive coordinator??? I thought he was pretty good..
I am not sure but the Florida D got 30 some dropped on them by the worst team in 1A ... he cant be that good.

At lunch I had ESPN on the tv... it said not only was Zook fired, but the whole coaching staff was fired...
At the press conference, the AD said that had been reported incorrectly. Only Zook has been fired and the other coaches can be retained by the new coach if offered.

Most likely the vast majority of them will leave or not be retained.

that makes more sense... I was floored that they would dump the whole staff in the middle of the season (think about the recruiting efforts if the staff knew they didn't have a job at the end of the year)... guess this time bomb was waiting to go off for a while...

Spurrier sucks. The defenses (not to mention overall competitiveness) of the SEC are way better than they were in the 90's. But I'd love to see him come back to florida just so to get stomped by everyone sans vanderbilt (I though I heard that he never won in starkville either.) Seeing his clueless mug on the sidelines in DC made me way happier than I'd ever thought it would. I can only hope that type of passing joy may someday re-enter my life.

Not sure if anyone cares. This should help them keep their 5 star running back recruit, I was wondering if Turner being fired would improve chances for opening up his commitment, then i just laughed and realized it probably made it stronger. Hear is to hoping Turned coaches the Domers. :tongue2:

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Former Florida coach Ron Zook will take over at Illinois, sources confirmed Monday.

<!-- END INLINE UNIT -->Zook's hiring as head coach will be announced at a news conference Tuesday. He will replace Ron Turner, who was fired Nov. 22 after the team went 3-8.

Florida fired Zook on Oct. 25 after an embarrassing loss at Mississippi State. Zook coached the Gators for the rest of the season, finishing 7-4, including 3-1 after he was fired, and getting an invitation to the Peach Bowl.

Zook's firing at Florida came after two-plus years with the Gators, satisfying a growing groundswell for his ouster that began the day he replaced Steve Spurrier, who left for the NFL.

Zook was 23-14 with Florida and had some impressive victories, including two over Georgia, one over eventual national champion LSU last season and an upset of Florida State on Nov. 20. It was the Gators' first win in Tallahassee since 1986. That may have been Zook's final game with Florida. He has not said whether he will coach the Gators in a bowl game.

Turner was fired after Illinois had just one Big Ten victory in two seasons. Just three years ago, Turner led the Illini to their first conference title in a decade.

Illinois won only once in 2003 and lost 14 Big Ten games in a row before defeating Indiana 26-22 on Nov. 6. Two of the Illini's four wins in the past two seasons have been against Division I-AA opponents, Illinois State and Florida A&M.
