Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

[Urban Meyer and Charlie Strong] aren't friends.
Did something happen since 2013 when this article was written?

..."Charlie's not a good friend," Meyer said. "He's a great friend. I would actually get angry when Charlie would not get jobs.

"I would think, ‘What else? What else?' People who really know Charlie aren't surprised by what he's done."

"He's a really good friend," Strong said. "We talk a lot. We can help one another. He's had the success that he's had because of the relationship with the players. That's what it's all about."

Here is the most substantive proof the friendship is solid: The Strong/Meyer relationship survived the fierce competition during the recruiting of former Trinity High School receiver James Quick...

Yes- the rumor is that Strong tried to hire Herman as his OC at Texas after one year at OSU and Meyer wasn't happy about it.

Herman = Meyer's guy for sticking with his two year commitment

Strong = not Meyer's guy for how he handled the situation
That article was written just as Herman's second season in Columbus was about to begin. Wasn't Strong hired at Texas just as Herman was completing his second year in Columbus?

edit: Yep, unless Wikipedia is mistaken, Strong was hired at UT in January 2014, more than two years after Herman was hired at OSU. That seems like a significant drawback for this theory of why Meyer and Strong no longer like one another.

Minus the "two year obligation" part Strong tried to hire Herman as his OC when he got the Texas job and Meyer wasn't happy about how it went down is the story.

One person I'd like to see at least get a courtesy call for the LB/DC job would be Bud Foster at VaTech (despite it being a lateral move). Not an Ohio guy, but a Midwest guy with lots of LB coaching experience that I would be sure Urban would have on a short list

I'm just going to enjoy finding out who it is.

Urban Meyer might be a better evaluator of coaching talent than he is of playing talent.

(I don't want to hear about Beck)

Never leaving Va Tech.

Sad but true. Although it's always worth a courtesy call

If we're spitballing here, I would love to see the following individuals get a call:

- Bo Pelini : probably won't happen, but still.
- Jim Leavitt : current DC at Colorado. Ranked 17th in total Defense this year. Put the USF program on the map as HC, before leaving due to reports of striking a player. Damn - that's a black mark.
- Phil Snow : current DC at Temple, ranked #3 this year in overall D. Of course, they weren't exactly playing the Clemsons and Louisvilles of the world, but still impressive. He appears to be loved by his players, given the fact that they are lobbying for him to be named HC

West Point at #5 in total D is also pretty damn impressive. Not sure how well coaching at the Academies translates to coaching somewhere where your linemen don't have to make weight at the end of the season, but might be worth checking out.

At this point, we don't need a full blown DC. We need to replace the LB coach. As long as Schiano isn't poached this year, we need to replace a position coach. I'm sure Urban has a few names in mind as things go along.

Unless Urban plans to promote LJ or Coombs to DC, they will be looking for another DC. Urban has been quoted when he hired Schiano that he likes a 2 person system, not a dictatorship.
