Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

OHIO STATE HIRES VETERAN COACH PAUL RHOADS AS ANALYST

121121_h.jpg

Paul Rhoads is reportedly joining the Buckeyes as a defensive analyst. He brings more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Buckeyes.

Rhoads, most notably, was the head coach at Iowa State from 2009 to 2015. He spent last season at Arizona as the Wildcats' defensive coordinator after previously serving as the defensive backs coach at UCLA and defensive coordinator at Arkansas. Before becoming Iowa State's head coach, Rhoads was also the defensive coordinator at Auburn for one year and the defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh from 2000-07.

As an analyst, Rhoads will not be involved in coaching players on the field, but will assist the Buckeyes' on-field coaches with scouting opponents and game planning.

VETERAN COACH TODD FITCH JOINING OHIO STATE'S COACHING STAFF AS OFFENSIVE ANALYST

121122_h.jpg

Ryan Day is adding another veteran to his staff in a support role.

Todd Fitch is coming to Ohio State as an offensive analyst, joining defensive analyst Paul Rhoads who was also recently hired, according to Ohio State's staff directory. Fitch is listed as a quality control coach for offense.

Like Rhoads, Fitch will bring more than 30 years of coaching experience to Columbus.

Fitch has nearly two decades of experience as an offensive coordinator, most recently at Vanderbilt, where he finished the 2020 season as interim head coach following Derek Mason's firing. Fitch was previously the offensive coordinator at Connecticut (1996-98), East Carolina (2007-09), South Florida (2010-12), Boston College (2015) and Louisiana Tech (2016-17), while he's also been a quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers coach at various stops.
.
.
.
Not until this offseason has Day gotten serious about adding veteran coaches as analysts. Unlike Nick Saban, who has used this practice for years at Alabama, it hasn't been commonplace at Ohio State. Day said last week, however, that he was looking into the possibility, and has now decided to add two veteran analysts to assist the full-time coaching staff.

“It’s something that I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about,” Day said when asked about potentially hiring analysts on Feb. 3. “Every program is different. You have to do what’s right for your program. And now that I’m going into year three, taking a hard look at that, and seeing if there are some people around who would be the right fit.”

OHIO STATE HIRING FORMER BUCKEYE SAFETY C.J. BARNETT AS DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

121067_h.jpg

Ohio State is bringing back one of its own to lead its off-field player development program.

C.J. Barnett, who was a safety for the Buckeyes from 2010-13, is returning to the Ohio State football program as its new director of player development, as first reported by Buckeye Scoop's Tony Gerdeman. He is listed in Ohio State's staff directory as the director of player development and external affairs.

Barnett replaces Ryan Stamper, who was Ohio State's director of player development for the last nine years before leaving last month to join Urban Meyer's staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A three-year starter with the Buckeyes who was a team captain as a senior, Barnett has spent the last year-and-a-half working as a Columbus Police officer, joining the force in July 2018.

Some of Sampler's duties included:

Chief among Stamper’s responsibilities is running the football program’s highly successful and proactive “Real Life Wednesday” initiative that puts business and athletic leaders in front of Ohio State athletes for real world education on life after football. The program includes resume writing and concludes each spring with a job fair that typically draws 50 to 75 businesses on campus.

At these salaries how do they not have a crew of 20+ analysts doing film study? With 1-2 people literally assigned to every team on our schedule, plus a couple of people that watch nonstop Bama and Clemson film all season long. An 'OC' and 'DC' of film that wrangle this thing. Though I'd kind of feel bad for the guy that has to spend the season analyzing ttun film.

Rhoads once made 2 million per year. Will be making 48k this year. Ouch!
Butch Jones went from $4+m to #35,000 at Bama...

Bama has 12, I agree, Why don't we employ more? I'm sure a number of former coaches would accept this job as a stepping stone.

Not an “ouch” at all. He’s still collecting buyout money from Arizona.

They don’t need this salary.

In fact... Don't those buyout clauses say something about paying the buyout back if you take a job making greater than $x...

Pretty sure that's a thing. Also pretty sure that half a hundred of you guys remember those details better than I do

That is correct. I’ve read that some guys can’t take an equal or better job and then some guys can’t make over a certain dollar amount, or they’ll lose most or all of that buyout.
