Sampson James (RB Indiana, transfer to Purdue, transfer BACK to Indiana)

Catching up on the DVR to watch James. Avon played Ben Davis so this was a primetime matchup and one of the best programs Sampson will play all year.

1st drive- trick play on the first play leads to a passing TD. No carries.

2nd Drive- All him (11 carries, 72 yards, TD). Kid wastes no motion getting to the hole, looks slim with his 6'1 frame but runs with a lot of power and falls forward every time. He's 210 but will add 15-20lbs at OSU. Just a little wiggle but it's all about getting upfield and getting yards. That was impressive. Perfect RB.

3rd drive- great run on an inside handoff much like OSU's offense, sheds tackle to the outside and finishes with a spin move to fall forward to 2 yard line. Punches the next carry in for TD #2

4th drive- first sign of his excellent speed in the open. Takes first carry to the edge for 25 yards, hit that with a quickness. Already up to 114 yards in the first half. Didn't finish drive.

5th drive- looks like Sampson is off to the lockeroom with about 4 minutes left in half to get checked out.

6th drive- he's back but BD stuffs the middle. 2 carries, 1 yard.

7th drive- Avon goes to a sweep instead of inside read, gets James going a bit. QB throws a pick.

8th drive- Slender due to his height, but he is definitely an inside runner. Looks natural and again gets going upfield for positive yards. Now carrying tacklers on a 15 yard run. 20 carries for 135 at end of 3Q. Workhorse night against a big team. Ends the drive by taking on a Dlineman that allows QB to throw a deep TD. That's the good stuff.

9th drive- inside handoff again, gets outside with some stiffarms and takes it 30 yards and then takes a late hit (not bad, just low as he got pushed out on sideline). More carries bouncing off linemen and LBs. Just pure aggression and getting forward. Woo! And we get the swing pass, quick move and he's gone for 26 yard TD reception. Nevermind, called back on ineligible downfield. Still a nice catch and move. Drive stalls

10th and final- 3 conservative runs as they run out clock up 41-30 under 3 minutes.

Late TD and onside recovery by BD, but Sampson's Avon holds on for 41-36 win. 25 carries, 178 yards 2 TDs

Any insight into behind the reason for this?
Specifically, no.

But Sampson was at the game yesterday. I'm guessing that he got some bad vibes from the coaching staff.

Ohio State's depth chart is also not favorable: Dobbins has one year left and he will be the man next season; it looks like Snead and Teague will redshirt this year, giving them 4 more years each; Steele Chambers now looks like an RB for the Class of 2019; and Darvon Hubbard is the guy for 2020.

Just sayin': Dobbins is a SO he has 2 more years of eligibility left. Weber is RS JR he also could return next year.

i’m not 100% convinced Chambers ends up at RB... he might start there.. but i don think he finishes his buckeye career there
