Indiana at tOSU, November 21st, Noon on Fox

Thought I'd wait a bit for the vitriol to come out. Having said that, thought that tOSU came out sky high, and played like a National Champion - on both sides of the ball. Second half, another story. First, put Werner back outside on the TEs. Browning may be faster, but cannot cover as well. Second, try someone else at S. Proctor looks for the big hit, and forgets to wrap them up. Hooker hasn't yet developed a 'nose for the ball'. Not certain what's what with the DBs, obviously didn't look like BIA today. Middle of the DL is stout, showing a negative run stat for the IU running game, but the DE's weren't getting the outside pressure we fans have come to expect from tOSU DEs. The tackles just rode the outside rush around and behind Penix. Did anyone see a LB blitz? I mean, for tOSU.....as IU did it on every play (almost). Sooo, where's 88 or 89 releasing to the middle of the field? On D, I get Combs coming back as Co-DC, but isn't Mattison up in the press box, looking, looking, analyzing? AND coming up with adjustments? H&G might have the clue about Combs, is he arrogant enough to ignore Mattison's suggestions? IUs WRs were decent, but not tOSU worthy, and they made our DBs break their ankles. Whooo boy. I'll be curious as how the "Committee" analyzes this game when the first real CFP ranking come out. Could be we fall out of the top 4 - at least for now. Beating up on the next three opponents, and then Northwestern in the conference playoff (even putting up 100 on Meatchicken), may not be enough. Hope so, though. Go Bucks! FIX IT

Some thoughts from the box score

Pennix passing by quarter
1st: 5/14 for 50 yards. Long of 19
2nd: 7/8 for 147 yards and a TD. Long of 68
3rd: 6/9 for 146 yards. 2TD/1 INT. Long of 63
4th: 9/20 for 148 yards and 2 TD. Long of 56

Pretty consistent which reinforces what I think I saw live and that is the defense did not make many adjustments, or at least they weren't effective adjustments.

206 yards on 4 plays (42% of the total) screams out "busted coverage/blown assignments". It felt a lot like Maryland in 2018.

I also saw this from Ryan Day courtesy 11W, bold is mine:
“Any time you have a problem like that, it’s one of three things,” Day said. “You say to yourself, do you have the right personnel there? So you look at who’s doing it. Then the second thing is, what is the scheme? Does the scheme give our guys the right opportunity to be successful? And then if both of those boxes get checked, then it goes to coaching. Are we coaching it correctly? So I think that’s, when you’re trying to fix something, you have to identify one of these three things that needs to get addressed, or maybe a little bit of each.

“Usually, when you assess something like that, it’s not like, OK, it’s only this. It’s usually a little bit of this, a lot of this, maybe a little bit here or there. And if you tighten up all three of those areas, usually you see improvement.”

Asked about the possibility of making changes to the defensive lineup, Day indicated that he didn’t expect to replace any starters, but said that would also be evaluated during film study.

“At the end of the day, you have to put the best players on the field to make plays,” Day said. “We believe in our guys, we have confidence in our guys, so I’ll be very surprised if we have to make any changes. But maybe we will. We have to watch the film and see, because almost 500 yards of offense in terms of passing is too much, and that’s just not acceptable.”

  1. Right personnel? "We believe in our guys, we have confidence in our guys, so I’ll be very surprised if we have to make any changes."
  2. Right scheme? See stats above
  3. Coaching it properly? See stats above
Pretty revealing comments in my opinion.
