Sources: Philadelphia Eagles trade QB Carson Wentz to Indianapolis Colts for two draft picks

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could turn into a first-rounder, league sources told ESPN.

The Eagles will receive the 85th overall pick in this year's draft, and the conditional second-rounder can become a first-round pick based on Wentz's playing time, according to sources. Wentz needs to play at least 75% of the Colts' offensive snaps for the 2022 conditional pick to convey to a first-rounder, according to sources.

The pick also could become a first-rounder if Wentz plays at least 70% of the snaps and the Colts reach the playoffs. But the worst the 2022 pick can be is a second-rounder, meaning the Eagles are assured of netting two value picks for Wentz.

The Eagles and Colts spent much of the past two weeks trying to finalize the trade, which cannot be officially processed until the new NFL year begins March 17. Despite being speculated as a potential suitor for Wentz in trade talks, the Chicago Bears did not wind up making an offer to the Eagles, according to a source.

The Eagles will take a $33.8 million dead-cap hit -- the largest dead-cap hit that any team ever has taken for a player -- while the Colts will assume the balance of Wentz's $128 million extension, including the $10 million guaranteed roster bonus due March 19.

Each team walks away from the deal with what it wanted across all fronts: Wentz will be reunited with Colts head coach Frank Reich, his former offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, and help fill the void left by Philip Rivers' retirement, while the Eagles are likely to turn to Jalen Hurts, though they also intend to bring in competition for him. The Eagles' starting job is not expected to automatically go to Hurts.

Carson Wentz trade grades: Colts secure quarterback as Eagles potentially land a first-round pick

Here's how we're grading the Carson Wentz trade to Indianapolis

Indianapolis Colts
Receive: Carson Wentz, QB
Trade grade: B

You do have to give GM Chris Ballard some credit. He didn't bid against himself and the Colts didn't really blink in their budgeted price for Wentz even as Philly held out for something closer to a Matthew Stafford-type haul, which was never a realistic option. As for that conditional 2022 second-rounder, it does bump up to a first if Wentz plays in 75% of the snaps next season or if he plays in 70% of the snaps and Indy reaches the playoffs. If Wentz is able to tap back into his potential become the type of quarterback that can lead the Colts to the playoffs, I don't think many around Lucas Oil Stadium will care too much about losing a pick in the lower half of the first round.

Philadelphia Eagles
Receive: Third-round pick (2021), conditional second-rounder (2022)
Trade grade: B-

Philly didn't get the crazy haul that it may have dreamed about when it first kicked the tires on moving on from Wentz, but there is still a shot for the Eagles to get into the first round next year. If Indy makes Wentz the full-time starter, it seems like that conditional second is essentially a lock to bump into the first in 2022 outside of a possible injury. Meanwhile, the 2021 third-rounder does have the potential of bringing in a nice piece to add to this new-look club under Nick Sirianni. While the compensation isn't horrible, it's hardly what you'd want when moving on from a player you drafted at No. 2 overall not too long ago and viewed -- as recently as the start of this past season -- as your franchise cornerstone.

Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Ryan says 'time was right' for change after 14 seasons with Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan felt he would be a quarterback of one of only two teams next season: the Atlanta Falcons or Indianapolis Colts.

His desire to play for a different team for the first time in his 14-year NFL career came last weekend after a Zoom call with Colts general manager Chris Ballard, head coach Frank Reich, offensive coordinator Marcus Brady and assistant quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier. The Falcons traded the 36-year-old Ryan to the Colts on Monday for a third-round pick in this year's draft.

"Their passion, their commitment, their professionalism, the accountability Chris has for himself and what he does, the empathy Frank has for my situation of understanding of being in a certain spot and done it for one way," Ryan said Tuesday during his introductory news conference as the Colts new starting quarterback. "I just knew the roster they have and the belief in the way they do things, the time was right for me. I knew that it was time to go in a different direction."
