Indians Tidbits (2010 season)

Here's the thing about Masterson, if he's off, he's off from the get go and is worthless. When he's on, he'll give you 6+ solid innings. The very nature of his inconsistency actually makes him more suited for a #4-5 starter. It's only due to the weakness of this rotation that he's probably Cleveland's #3 guy.

This will be Dolan's dream offseason as Cleveland has young guys that have gotten playing time all over the place, so there will be no need to actually spend any money. There are only 3 places in which it would make financial sense to invest substantial money.

1. LF power hitter. Make Brantley #4 OF.
2. 1B Power hitter. Laporta rides the bench.
3. Top of the rotation starting pitcher. Good luck with that.

It makes no financial sense to invest in the bullpen, utility IF, or to fork over substantial cash for a pedestrian 3rd baseman.

Really, just roll with the following lineup:

1. Brantley - Lf
2. AsCab - SS
3. Choo - RF
4. Santana - C
5. Hafner - DH
6. Sizemore - CF
7. Laporta - 1st
8. Whoever - 3rd
9. Donald - 2nd

I'd even be open to swapping Sizemore and Laporta. Sizemore simply K's way too much to lead off, and until he proves he can be what he was in '05-'07 again, he shouldn't be any higher in the lineup.

Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and a Saint to be named later...that lineup is garbage. That is the Arizona Diamondbacks of 2 years ago (average, strikeouts, crappy speed, poor fielding), except of course they won't hit any of the HRs that Arizona did. Hafner is a platoon DH in the 8 hole on a mediocre team and he's our #5 hitter. Brantley is a poor man's Bourn, we have nobody to play any position in the infield that can hit for fuck except Asdrubal (which is ironic because it is hardest to find a SS that can hit) and we have a legit RF and 2 4th outfielders to play outside. Santana is a beast. OK, so we have 2 good players, 2 mediocre ones, and a bunch of perpetual part-time suck. Yeah, I'm thinking a deep playoff run in 2012, alright, because I believe in the Dolan 5 year plan!!!1111!!1!1!11 :slappy:

well, when you have a team that wants to keep payroll around $60 million or so, this is what you get. It makes no financial sense to buy what would at best be modest upgrades from young guys that may or may not take another progressive step.

at the end of the day, this will be cleveland baseball until MLB either institutes a salary cap, or people start showing up at games.

In short, Hollywood should fire up that next 'Major League' script...

...but, I'm not totally doom and gloom. There is some hope. If they follow the same plan the '02-'05 Tribe had (which they appear to be), they can be competitive again in 2-3 years. Add in the fact that we now appear to have a GM that actually gives a shit about the draft and there's reason to hope. You just have to accept the fact that any of these prospects that hit will be gone after 5-6 years when they become too expensive.

I'm not all doom and gloom either, we have some good arms, lots of them in fact, so I think the pitching might be headed in the right direction, which could keep us in some games. But if this team hopes to ever win more than 75 games again...ever...they're going to need better hitters than the lineup posted above, unless we are bringing in the 1965 Dodgers pitching staff.

Absolutely. I'm still holding out some hope for LaPorta (very little, but some). I was reading that they're gonna spend a lot of time with him this offseason working on his lower body strength and his swing. Apparently the toe and hip injuries really messed up his swing causing him to just swing with his arms most of the year. So maybe, just maybe, he can turn into something after all. Chisenhall was solid in Akron this year and he could be a good one at 3B down the road a little. I like Nick Weglarz as a corner OF soon...hopefully mid-2010.

when i posted that lineup, it wasn't because i thought it was overly impressive. but, for a small market team with a limited payroll, it's the best financial action.

is Andy Marte going to be brought back again?

we can not get rid of the fucker

Hey, don't forget that Cy Marte mowing down the Yankers was THE highlight of the season. Tribe fans who left early missed a true treat: after Marte pitched we didn't even care that the scoreboard showed a blowout cuz the Yankers fans were so embarrassed they just shut up and left! That alone was worth the season of seeing Marte's half speed swings and delayed reactions on batted balls!!!
