Indians Tidbits (2010 season)

tsteele316;1617729; said:
well, to be fair, this guy's referring to the starting rotation, which consists of a series of #3 and #4 starters, with maybe a #2 mixed in. so, in order to sign someone of value to the starting rotation, cleveland would have to pay a lot on money for a front of the rotation guy. so, his tweet is hardly groundbreaking information.
Agreed. I think most of us have known this since the financial issues surfaced when they were shopping VMart and Cliff. I never expected them to bring anybody else in. They're not going to be competitive next year, so why throw money away on some retread arm when you have a glut of young guys that you want to try out?

That said, next years rotation has the potential to be all-time bad. Hopefully one or two young guys proves to be semi-effective and Fausto can find some happy medium between dominant Fausto and tee-ball Fausto.

Indians Prospect Insider: 2009 Rule 5 Draft Live Blog

Here is some quick info on the Indians new pickup in the Rule 5 Draft, right-hander Hector Ambriz. The Indians got an extensive look at him back when he was at UCLA as he was a teammate of lefty David Huff who they were scouting heavily at the time. He throws a fastball that sits 91-93 MPH and touches up to 95 MPH. His splitter is a very good pitch and is his out pitch. Indians are considering him for the bullpen and think his stuff has potential to play up as a reliever. I will have a more detailed scouting report in my wrapup piece tomorrow morning.

Not Rule 5 related, but supposedly former Indians pitcher Charles Nagy has rejoined the organization and will be the Triple-A Columbus pitching coach. More in an update later.

Cleveland Indians complete Kelly Shoppach trade; sign reliever Saul Rivera
By Paul Hoynes, The Plain Dealer
December 21, 2009

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians got right-hander Mitch Talbot today from Tampa Bay to complete the Kelly Shoppach trade.

Talbot, 26, has a career minor league record of 62-54 with a 3.79 ERA in 165 starts. Last season, he went 4-4 in 10 starts at Class AAA Durham but was slowed by a sore right elbow. Talbot ended the season healthy.

Talbot was Houston's second-round pick in 2002. He's been invited to big league camp with the Indians in February.

Along with Shoppach, the Indians sent Tampa Bay an undisclosed amount of cash.

In another move, the Indians signed right-hander Saul Rivera to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Rivera made a franchise-record 245 relief appearances for the Washington Nationals from 2006 through 2009.

Rivera, 32, appeared in 50 or more games per season from 2006 through 2008. In 2007, he went 4-6 with three saves and a 3.68 ERA in 85 appearances for manager Manny Acta's Natrionals. He made 30 appearances last season.

He's 13-15 with a 4.05 ERA in his big league career.

oh joy

Talbot = right handed Jeremy Sowers, just what we needed!

and Saul Rivera :slappy:

one teams trash = the Indians treasure
You better not laugh at this guy because the Indians consider him "major-league ready" and he could be one of our starters next year... now that's funny:lol: Sowers is out of options next year as is Talbot:slappy:Terry Pluto's Talkin' . . . about the Browns quarterbacks and Shaquille O'Neal's presence in the Cavs lineup | Terry Pluto: Plain Dealer Sports Columnist's Blog - cleveland.com - - cleveland.com

2. The Indians think Talbot could grab a spot in the rotation, or at least be a long reliever. He is out of minor-league options. He had elbow problems last season, and made only 10 Class AAA starts (4-4, 4.47 ERA). But Talbot pitched in the Arizona Fall League, his fastball was clocked at 93 mph, and he supposedly has an effective changeup.

3. Once, Talbot was a top prospect for Tampa Bay. He had consecutive seasons of 13-9 at Class AAA in 2007 and 2008. The elbow problems stalled him last season. He's not a kid at 26, and it seems like it's now or never for Talbot. "We consider him a major-league ready pitcher," said Assistant General Manager Chris Antonetti. "He would have been with Florida last year, except for the elbow injury. He's healthy now. He's had 400 innings in Class AAA, and that's an asset."

and the superstars keep rollin in

Indians Sign Austin Kearns: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

The Indians signed outfielder Austin Kearns to a minor league deal, according to a team press release.

Kearns, 30 in May, hit .195/.336/.305 in 211 plate appearances for the Nationals this year, logging 363 innings in right field. He had thumb surgery in August, ending his season. The Nats predictably declined Kearns' $10MM club option after the season, finishing a three-year, $17.5MM extension given by Jim Bowden in January of '07.
it gets much better....

Indians Sign Shelley Duncan: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Chad Jennings of The Journal News reports that the Cleveland Indians have signed longtime Yankee farmhand Shelley Duncan.

Duncan has hit just .219/.290/.411 in 163 major league plate appearances over three seasons, but had another strong season in Triple-A this past year, posting a batting line of .277/.370/.546 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Duncan is 30, and could challenge for playing time in left field with the Indians. Keep in mind that if he shows anything with the bat, he's the type of player managers like to keep around, and would likely get the benefit of the doubt. His Triple-A numbers also indicate he could flourish with some regular major league at-bats. Good pickup for Cleveland.

Cleveland Indians sign accomplished big league hitter Mark Grudzielanek, 39, to minor league contract
By Starting Blocks
January 12, 2010, 11:55AM

The Cleveland Indians have signed infielder Mark Grudzielanek, a .290 hitter in 14 major league seasons, to a minor league contract.

Last week, Cleveland signed outfielder Austin Kearns and first baseman-outfielder Shelley Duncan to minor league deals. Like Grudzielanek, they are right-handed hitters.

Grudzielanek was 36 when he won the 2006 American League Gold Glove award as a second baseman with the Kansas City Royals.

hate to say, but I personally love Grudz

might not be THAT bad of a signing if he makes the roster as the Utility IFer and can perform somewhat like he did in 2008 before getting hurt
Don't let your personal feelings get in the way when evaluating a player. Look what happened to Wedge. The only problem with Grudz is the fact that he is 39 years old. Yes, I remember when he was pretty good but at 39 they don't recovery very quickly.

On breaking news, the Indians called up all their first-round draft choices of the past few years to come to Spring Training:slappy:

yea I saw that to

CC Sabathia is pretty much the last Indians 1st round pick to achieve anything, we pretty much suck at making 1st round picks

Lonnie Chisenhall I think may eventually be good

Beau Mills and Alex White not really sure

That's an understatement...

2009- (15)Alex White, RHP, North Carolina
2008- (29)Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, Pitt CC
2007- (13)Beau Mills, 3B, Lewis-Clark State
2005- (14)Trevor Crowe, CF, Arizona
2004- (6)Jeremy Sowers, LHP, Vanderbilt
2003- (11)Michael Aubrey, 1B, Tulane
2003- (17)Bradley Snyder, OF, Ball State
2003- (31)Adam Miller, RHP,McKinney HS
2002- (22)Jeremy Guthrie, RHP, Stanford
2001- (27)Alan Horne, RHP, Marianna (FL) HS
2001- (17)Dan Denham, RHP, Deer Valley HS
2000- (26)Corey Smith, SS, Piscataway, NJ

The jury's still out on White, Chisenhall and Mills. Crowe looks like a career backup OF, Sowers is a schlub, Aubrey is gone after little to no impact, Guthrie is elsewhere after little impact, we know Miller's story, Snyder/Horne/Denham and Smith flamed out before reaching the bigs. Blech...

and then if that doesn't get you excited for the coming season there is always this

Jake Westbrook is all for being the Indians' opening day starter on April 5, but first there's a little matter of whether his right elbow can get through spring training. Full story ?

At least Laporta should be ready to play and I would rather see the young guys get some action for my entertainment dollar.
