Mental note... if I'm ever in the the cabinet selling business, don't call Dihard...

Anybody know where to pick up decent pergo flooring at cheap prices? I've got a place that needs it, and I'm not willing to put much money into it (it will be a rental unit after we move out in a couple of years... no sense in spending good money for another person to come in and destroy)...

Edit: and where to pickup some nice windows at decent prices as well (I've been tolkd to buy windows in the winter when their business is slow... has anybody purchased windows recently???)
Check Lumber Liquidators, also check Ikea (not pergo brand, but i'm sure you are just talking about laminate flooring?)

A man was setting at a bar enjoying an after-work cocktail when an exceptionally gorgeous, young woman entered. She was so striking that the man could not take his eyes away from her.

The young woman noticed his overly-attentive stare and walked directly towards him. Before he could offer his apologies for being so rude, the young woman said to him, "I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for $100 on one condition."

Flabbergasted, the man asked what the condition was. The young woman replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."

The man considered her proposition for a moment, withdrew his wallet from his pocket and slowly counted out five $20 bills, which he pressed into the young woman's hand. He looked into her eyes and slowly, meaningfully said, "Install my cabinets."

Darn, I know I shouldn't say this, but I actually am a manufacturer rep for one of the largest cabinets makers in America. No, not Kraftmaid, but I know an awful lot about Kraftmaid. There sale is in Middlefield, OH every Saturday.

No, it is not Kemper. kemper is not a bad cabinet. The problem that you experienced is very common with cabinets. I am not saying it is accceptable, I am saying it is common.

The dings, scratches, and alot of things happen in shipping, and delivery.
Replacing a door, or drawer front is something most places will do no questions asked. As long as you aren't complaining about grain variations, stain variations, and things like that which are part of wood.

If you paid the MSRP you got big time robbed.
Every cabinet line has a list price, and then a discount factor.
Example: $15000 list price, but 66% off=$5000 sell price. The factor is .34.

I too believe cabinets are expensive, but if you saw all that went into making them, you would change your mind. The most expensive part of a cabinet is the door, and face frame, because in most lines, those are solid wood. The sides are usually particle board with a print finish, unless you get a higher end line which will have plywood ends. The glue is also very common. When a cabinet side is attaced to the back, it is just hotmelt, and staples holding it together. Also, the cabinets not being squared probably means they were racked. This means somewhere, probably in shipping, they were picked up wrong, and shifted around, and it actually bent the squareness of the cabinet.

People bitch about the price of cabinets, but the kitchen is the room that people really tend to show off. You can go realy nuts if you can afford it.

If you really feel you got robbed, call Carter, and have their poeple look at it.
If they don't give satisfactory answers, tell them you want to hear from the Manufacturer Rep.

If you have never installed before, be sure to remove all doors, clamp cabinets together, and screw them together. That gives a much cleaner look.
Also, make sure you hit studs with your screws. Do not use drywall screws. That is a mistake alot of people make, and the head may snap off.
Use shims if your wall is not square. This is very important to make sure your cabinets stay mounted.

As far as the door being hinged wrong, unless your doors are arched/cathedral, they are reversable. Just flip the door. If they are arch, the company needs to send you a new door. That is a really minor thing.

I appricate your post, especially since you are an "insider", however. I understand that there are common issues. I have worked with wood and done carpentry for years now, (my father and I built his entire kitchen, b/c we had the time to do so, and I was under a time crunch). I didn't pay MSRP for my cabinets, actually paid less than 30% of that price. When i said that the cabinets aren't square, its the face plate thats not square. two of the cabinets were seriously over 1/4 inch off, it was horrible. I understand that they are a mass manufactured job, but there should be some QC processes, no?

The door that was hinged wrong was an issue b/c it is arched (or i would have just flipped it over). The new door is on its way. The dings and scratches were inside of the cabinets, for example, there are 3 places that they stapled the shelves in place (to the top of the cabinet for shipping purposes) and the staples when through to the inside of the cabinet! The excess glue is on the inside as well, and not near a joint or anything, just random like someone just made a mess and didn't care to clean it up.

Thanks for the post though.
