Iowa Hawkeyes extending men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery's contract through 2028

Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery signed a four-year contract extension through 2027-28 on Monday after leading the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes to the Big Ten tournament semifinals and their highest NCAA tournament seeding since 1987.

The Hawkeyes are 21-8 and finished third in the Big Ten regular season at 14-6. They've been ranked in the top 15 every week this season and peaked at No. 5 last week. The team is a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and will play Grand Canyon on Friday in Indianapolis.

McCaffery's annual base salary of $2.3 million for the next two seasons will remain unchanged. He took a 15% pay cut for this year to help the athletic department offset shortfalls caused by the pandemic. He is on track to receive longevity bonuses at the end of the next two seasons.

His annual salary will increase each of the last five years of the deal. Those increases were not announced.

Just sayin': He got a good contract while Iowa was a top 10 team. It will be interesting to see how Iowa does next season without Luka Garza (Senior) and Jordan Bohannon (5th year Senior). Even though they get a free year this year; realistically, I don't expect either one to comeback next season.

Predicted champion: Iowa

The best state in the United States, Iowa, will be home to this years National Champion! Why is it the best state? Because they care about two things: sports and beer (two things I love too). The Hawkeyes boast the National Player of the Year in Luka Garza and they will be "thrilled" to get out of the gauntlet that is the Big Ten Conference. They have experienced guards, can shoot the three and their defense has clearly improved. They will obviously see Gonzaga in the Elite Eight to go to the Final Four. I guarantee whatever venue they play at will be "packed" with Iowa fans and that spread will between 3-4 points favoring the Zags. Gonzaga won the previous meeting of these two teams 99-88 in December. I'll take my chances in that game and win that game, the rest is smooth sailing! Go Hawkeyes!

“He’s a guy that is going to present problems for anybody on our schedule,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said. “He’s incredibly talented, fiercely competitive. You’re going to have to focus a lot of your game plan on him and what he provides because what we’ve seen him do this year is really complete the picture. The way he’s passing out of the post, the way he’s moving the ball, the way he stretches the floor from 3-point range and how that opens things up for everybody else also makes it difficult.”

Garza declared for the 2020 NBA Draft after a dominant junior year, but then decided to come back to school. On Tuesday, ESPN released its early 2021 NBA Mock Draft rankings, and it had Garza as the No. 58 prospect in next year's draft.
https://247sports.com/college/iowa/...za announced on Sunday,to come back to school.

I wonder how much (if any) he improved his NBA draft status this season.

Iowa senior Luka Garza earns men's Naismith Player of the Year honors

Iowa senior Luka Garza was named the 2021 men's Naismith Player of the Year, awarded annually to the best player in men's college basketball.

Garza was a finalist last season and becomes the first Iowa men's player to win the award.

"Winning an award in Naismith's name is an honor my family and I will always treasure. Naismith changed my life, and so many others, by creating the game that so many love. In 2015, when my dad and I watched Frank Kaminsky accept the Naismith Trophy in Indianapolis, I never thought I would be in this position six years later," Garza said. "I am forever thankful to the University of Iowa, Coach McCaffery, the rest of the coaching staff, my teammates, my family and the countless other people and coaches who have helped me along the way. This is not an individual honor but a team award, and I am so proud to be able to bring this award home to Iowa City. Thank you to the Atlanta Tipoff Club for this prestigious award and thank you to Naismith for changing my life and so many others with the game of basketball."

Former Iowa Hawkeye Luka Garza becomes latest athlete to sell NFT

Luka Garza, the former Iowa Hawkeyes star and Wooden Award winner, is the latest athlete to get in on the NFT trend.

When his college career ended with a loss in the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament, Garza became eligible to profit off of his name, image and likeness. After learning about the new world of NFTs through research, the 22-year-old economics major worked with his father and a team of designers to create his own NFT -- non-fungible token, a unique proof of ownership of a digital product like video clips or digital art work.

A portion of the proceeds from Garza's auction will be donated to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. The NFT auction ended Friday night, selling for a total of $41,141, according to OpenSea, the digital marketplace that hosted the auction.

"It's really, really cool to look," Garza told ESPN. "I hope to do more in the future and have a whole collection. And obviously, this one is gonna probably be the most exclusive."
.
.
.
In addition to acquiring ownership of the "Luka Garza Consensus National Player of the Year Card," the highest bidder of the auction was awarded the opportunity to meet Garza, compete in a game of H.O.R.S.E against him, share in Garza's meditation techniques and attend a dinner and movie with him. The winner also gets a lifetime "VIP pass" to all future basketball camps hosted by Garza, as well as an autographed pair of the shoes he was wearing when he broke the all-time Iowa men's basketball career scoring record.

Iowa men's basketball will see a key piece of its 2020-21 roster return next season. Hawkeyes standout Jordan Bohannon announced in a post to his Twitter account on Monday that he will return to the program for a final year during the 2021-2022 campaign, his sixth with Iowa.

During Iowa's 2020-21 campaign, Bohannon averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game as the Hawkeyes qualified for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as a No. 2 seed. He is one of only four Division I players since the 1992-93 season to amass more than 600 assists and 350 3-pointers.

Back in late May, Iowa men's basketball senior guard Jordan Bohannon was allegedly physically assaulted late at night in Iowa City, Iowa, and suffered a serious head injury that required medical attention. Bohannon did not suffer long-lasting harm, but authorities have been conducting in investigation as they seek to identify and charge the alleged assailant.

Just over two months later, law enforcement in Iowa has reportedly made an arrest in connection to Bohannon's case. Grant Schulte of the Associated Press reported former Iowa State defensive lineman Nick Kron was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury.

In addition, Schulte reported that Bohannon is suing the 29-year-old Kron, who now lives in Nashville, Tenn., and played for the Cyclones from 2010-13.

"Bohannon and Kron were both at DC’s Bar in Iowa City on May 23, according to police records," Schulte wrote, via WHO 13 in Des Moines. "After the bar closed, police said Kron and another person got into an argument outside. Police say Kron walked over to Bohannon, turned him around and punched him three times in the back of the head, knocking him to the ground and causing a cut on his head."
