Islam, wacko religion or just taken over by wackos?

I agree that wackos have hijacked Islam, but I disagree on two counts:

1. I think the number of Muslims following the wackos is a lot higher than some think. No, the lady dancing in the streets when the WTC collapsed probably won't hijack a plane and crash it into an office building, but she wasn't expressing disapproval, either.

2. Mentioning Pat Robertson in the same breath as "wackos" who preach killing non-believers as the key to paradise is just silly. There's "extreme", and then there's extreme. When old Pat starts preaching to his followers to "kill the infidel, martyr yourself, and go to heaven", I'll buy the comparison.

Don't be sold on the middle east Arab's religiosity. Their fever for their religion is overblown. I spent a year in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. I found their supposed religious lifestyle to be mostly a facade.
As a matter of fact, their general view of Americans was quite comical. On at least a half dozen occasions I was ask if I had drink, drugs or pornography on my person. After this happening a couple times I confronted the Arab that had ask me for these things and I ask him why it is that I've been ask for this stuff several times already. I said, "What, do you people think we Americans carry this stuff around all the time?" In broken English he basically said "Yes".
They have a lot of misconceptions about us as a nation and a people and much of the world doesn't really understand Arab culture. As I said, I spent a year there and I still didn't understand them.
I did come to believe that the Arabs enjoyed the fact they we viewed them as religious fanatics. It gave them a sense of superiority and hopefully caused the rest of the world to fear them a little.
During prayer time when these prayers are blasted over loud speakers everywhere, I saw few Arabs laying down their rugs and bowing to Mecca.

Well said Ashlandbuck.

I agree however that there religion has been taken over by wackos, but more so by people that are probably not horribly religious but speak loudly and carry a gun.

FYI for the most part in the middle ages in Europe most people were wacko over chirstianity. They would do anything to defend it, including it seems things completely against it. There leaders were generally corrupt and not great followers, but they knew how to read and others did not.

Ignorance flurished and therefore they could control people.

The difference is that we have taken the blinders off for the most part, and people can read the gospel themselves and make there own decesions without worring about be beheaded or hung.

There were somethings that went on between christians an muslims like the spanish inquisition and the crusades that is the history that most muslims in that region point to, as well as colonization where conversion was a big deal.

Here is the differece, like certain southerners are still fighting the civil war against the yanks, they are still fighting the wars of the 17th century backwards. They use a control on information, and intimidation, to mold them into this. They are not so much teaching there religion, but trying to maintain their status and power in the name of islam.

I know I went through a lot and left a lot of holes that I hope most of you can remember enough to fill in. But that is my take on what has happened to islam as a religion, and why these people are nuts.

the religious fanatics that flew the planes into the buildings were known to be visiting local american bars (getting hammered) and strip clubs in the days leading up to 9-11.......

Good points about Islam modernizing. One of our local congressmen is on the Intelligence Committee. He comes in and speaks to a group I am involved with on a regular basis. He spoke right after the war in Iraq. He shared with us what some of what he learned before the war.

One of the concepts was that Islam is going through a maturation process as most major religions do. He had a specific term that I do not recall. He mentioned that Judaism and Christianity had both gone through it long ago, but Islam was a younger religion. It was a theory that was shared with them and made some sense.

I vote: taken over by wackos.

(I realize that this type of stuff happens in all religions, but the irony in the article was overwhelming).

Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife : Police Blotter : The Buffalo News

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband ? an influential member of the local Muslim community ? reported her death to police Thursday.
Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.
"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.
Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.
Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

Wack-O's

Just like anything else that inspires passion in the followers, religion of any sort can and has been taken to extremes. You can say that about a lot of faiths. Islam like any religious concept can and has been taken over the edge by some. Tell me any religion that has not had its zealots.

Extremists of any sort are rarely on target, healthy, sane or for that matter right.
