It's a good thing Jose Contreras isn't Mexican...

Shh. Don't look now Tibor, but the difference is that Cuba is still a Communist nation and Mexico is a Federal Republic. It is a little harder to claim Political Asylum if you are from a country with the same structure as our own than if you are from North Korea.

yet illegals from countless other countries get turned down as well. Life in Haiti is probably just as bad as Cuba, but they get shuttled back to Haiti even if they are found in US waters. yet Cubans get embraced because of the Cuban-"American" (I use the term American loosely) mafia running Miami.

Tib,

I hate to say this, but you are right about Haiti. There are lots of countries as bad as Cuba where we turn them away because they are illegal. However, if you want to look at the decision based what is hopefully a rational basis, they are turned away unless they are from a Communist nation like Cuba.

Unfortunately, the cynical side of me thinks that had the player been a Haitian (sp?) his family would have still stayed. Who is going to deal with the PR nightmare of turning away someone like that? Most people who are sent back are never mentioned in the press. Reality is that this would have been an Elian fiasco had his family been returned, assuming they were from a non-Communist nation.

The country embraces countless illegal Cubans while decrying the illegal immigration from Mexico.

News flash, Rashmish: Mexico isn't under a Communist dictatorship, and Cuba doesn't send a tenth of the amount of Illegal immigrants that Mexico does.

Thank you, take a hike...
