Jacksonville Jaguars (official thread)

I love Urb and hope he is successful in JAX, but the field of college coaches that give the NFL a shot is littered with failure. Who was successful?

Jimmy Johnson

Am I missing anybody else?

Harbrau was very, very good for 3 years in the Bay, but the wheels came off in year 4.

Some people would try to say Pete Carroll, but Petey was a longtime NFL assistant and had 2 head coaching gigs (across 4 seasons) in the NFL before he went to USC.

Everyone else that I can think of ranged from mediocre to awful. Even the mighty Nick Saban was just 13-19 before bailing back to college.

Urb should have taken the Ara Parseghian route, retiring young at the top of his game and enjoy some cushy announcing/analyst jobs. But some people are just wired different. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but Urb seemed like the ultimate "college coach."

Yeah, not sure how this ends with any success. He has a young team, so that may help some. But his constant nepotism won't work in the same way in the NFL, and being able to pick the best players every year won't help either. Trading one of your best defensive players (https://www.si.com/nfl/jaguars/news/the-10-most-important-jaguars-for-2021-no-2-josh-allen) for a tuna sandwich and opened bag of M&Ms, signing Tebow and treating him quite favorably(he doesn't even play special teams) when he couldn't even be looked at by any other team at a new position, questionable coach from Iowa.
Ah well, he always can default to his health and bow out with little scrutiny in 2-3yrs.

Little scrutiny? The guy can't eat a pizza without it being scrutinized 80 different ways.

That's what he signed up for, he's a head coach. All NFL Head coaches are under scrutiny. He's just a 1st year coach, who had success in college and has made questionable decisions, if he has any extra scrutiny, he's brought in on himself.

Right, but you said he could pull the health card and not get scrutinized. I disagree.

Ahhhh, gotcha.
But he brought that scrutiny on himself the minute he let the world know about his health. If he just left UF for OSU, or if he just retired from OSU, yeah some fans would be mad, but nothing could be brought up about him essentially quitting when times got tough. That will forever follow him once he told the world about cyst, migraines, whatever issue that he has.

Watching Urban shaking his head on the sideline tonight, he appears to already be questioning why he took this job.

He's got a lot of work to do and it's going to take time. How many years does he want to dedicate to it?

I just do not see this ending well. As hot as he burns and as much as he HATES losing, how is he going to deal when good teams commonly lose 6-7 games a year? I could totally see a pretty speedy resignation not too far off in the future.

Great decision to draft a RB high given what their defense looks like
His GM is Trent Baalke. The fucking guy, I’m not even exaggerating, drafted a player almost every single season from 2011-2015 with the Niners coming off of some major, major injury…typically shredded ACLs. All of which would miss their rookie seasons and none of which ever made any significant contribution…most notable Marcus Lattimore, the South Carolina RB who had two gruesome knee injuries on national television in back-to-back seasons. Spent a 4th rounder on the guy and he retired before ever putting on a 49ers uniform. I can’t believe Urban is working with that clown.
