Jalen Rose DUI (speeding to jail)

Now bringing style to the unemployment line

ESPN analyst and former NBA player Jalen Rose has been in the news quite a bit lately, mostly for his controversial statements about Duke's recruiting practices in the excellent Fab Five documentary Rose produced for ESPN. The story surrounding his "Uncle Tom" remarks has mostly focused on the accuracy of the term, but the context of the statement -- that, ultimately, Rose clearly held that opinion in the past and explained that it was the product of ignorance and bitterness -- has proven that Rose is a thoughtful commentator with a too rare amount of self-awareness.

Is ESPN sending "Outside the Lines" to wait for Jalen outside the jail after his short stretch? Justine Gubar going to Michigan?

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan judge has sentenced former NBA guard Jalen Rose to serve 20 days in jail for a drunken driving crash along a snowy suburban Detroit road in March.
Any other ESPN analysts do time? Does this count towards his vacation days (was he saving up for this)?

I wish Ohio State or someone could pull a Jerry Seinfeld and turn the tables (heckle the hecklers).

Hours-after-DUI-sentence--Jalen-Rose-ticketed-for-speeding
Mike Martindale/ The Detroit News

Clawson - It was a bad day all around for Jalen Rose on Wednesday.
Less than nine hours after leaving a courthouse where he had been sentenced to serve 20 days in jail for drunken driving, Rose ran afoul of the law again, authorities said.
Clawson Police Chief Harry Anderson said Rose, 38, was stopped and ticketed for speeding on Main Street, just north of 14 Mile Road in Clawson, about 8:47 p.m. Wednesday.
"He was stopped heading south on Main — right in front of the police department — at 46 miles an hour in a 25-mile zone," Anderson said today. "There were no other violations or problems related to the stop and he was ticketed for going 10 over the speed limit and allowed to go on his way."

Wait, his license was not suspended from the DUI? I guess Michigan doesn't automatically suspend licenses for DUI like other states do. I am pretty sure Florida automatically suspends it for 6 months, with a 90 "hardship" (no temp/work privilages) as soon as you are arrested for DUI, and it is a full year if you refuse to roadside and/or breath tests.

"This was nothing less than an elected judge legislating from the bench," Davidson said. "This is a man who has given millions of dollars to charity, started schools around the world and worked endlessly for the community, yet her average sentence is 17 days, and she sentenced Mr. Rose to 20 days."

...

Rose's actual sentence is 92 days in jail and one year's probation, but Small suspended 72 days of the sentence. The maximum penalty for the charge is 93 days, but Rose received credit for the night he spent in jail after the crash.
I understand this is Jalen Rose's Attorney, but just because the guy is charitable doesn't mean he can get away with stuff. The Judge even suspended 72 days of the sentence.

There are numerous ways to get your license back after a DUI.

average sentance =17 days, rose got 20...seems fair to me. What's the big deal. Since an average means sometimes people get more than 17 and some get less than 17 I would say that 20 days is in line with an average sentance of 17.

fuck jalen and attorneys

Jalen Rose tried to injure Kobe Bryant during 2000 NBA Finals

On his podcast on ESPN?s Grantland Network, Jalen Rose made a serious admission in a clip released on Tuesday.
In the audio clip Rose admits that as a member of the Indiana Pacers during the 2000 NBA Finals, he intentionally tried to injure Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. As Bryant went up for a jump shot, Rose stuck his foot under the Lakers? superstar, in the hopes that he would land on it, turning an ankle, or worse.
Bryant did, in fact, land on Rose?s foot [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p38cQvw1eEk"]during the second quarter of Game 2[/ame] of that series. Bryant played just nine minutes in that game (which the Lakers won by seven), and missed Game 3, which the Pacers won 100-91.

Rose said the following in the clip:
?NBA Finals, 2000. Kobe. Bean. Bryant. Goes up for a jump shot on the right wing, I contest the jump shot, Kobe lands on my foot. He hobbles off, and he actually misses the next game.?
?Now, if it was up to me? If it was up to me? He should?ve just missed the whole series. I would have had a championship ring, and it?d be no harm, no foul.?
After badgering from his producer Dave Jacoby, Rose said the following:
?I can?t say that it was an accident.?
When Jacoby asks him how he has maintained a strong relationship with Bryant, Rose replied:
?He never knew I did it on purpose. But now he does.?
