James “not elite” Franklin (HC Penn St. Nittany Lions)

And just because I have to look at this stupid picture when this page loads (watch this be the post that carries it over to page 3)....I can't tell for sure, but the lion in this picture looks like an actual lion. A nittany lion is actually a cougar. That would be like us making some kind of image showing a buckeye, but using a peanut.

Morons.
Or maybe it's a PUMA!

Shot at Maryland and Rutgers... Interesting to see if he can back it up on the field.

It looks like he's hellbent on filling the "just can't help being an easy to hate douchebag" role left vacant in the conference by Beilema.

Also, I'm trying to find his best wins at Vanderbilt and am struggling a little bit.

2013
1-AA Austin Peay
1-11 UMass?
2-10 UAB?
8-5 Georiga?
4-8 Florida?
2-10 Kentucky?
5-7 Tennessee?
4-8 Wake Forest?
8-5 Houston?

2012
1-AA Presbyterian
5-7 Missouri?
3-9 Auburn?
1-11 UMass?
2-10 Kentucky?
7-6 Ole Miss?
5-7 Tennessee?
5-7 Wake Forest?
7-6 NC State?

2011
1-AA Elon
5-7 UConn?
2-10 Ole Miss?
3-9 Army?
5-7 Kentucky?
6-7 Wake Forest?

So seriously, what's the best win amongst that group? 8-5 Georgia in 2013, 8-5 Houston in 2013, 7-6 Ole Miss in 2012 or 7-6 NC State in 2012? Those are the only four teams with winning records that he's defeated.

As I was saying in the Recruiting forum, he can recruit but can he coach? O'Brien was a heck of a coach and history doesn't show Franklin being his equal. Having said that, he could still win a lot of games by just out recruiting most of the Big. May well be the next Bielema. This year could be very challenging for him as his offensive line is a hot mess.

James Franklin already planting Penn State flags in expanding Big Ten footprint

Penn State head coach James Franklin is talking the talk and getting fans excited for the new era of Nittany Lions football. On Tuesday Franklin successfully won a pair of recruiting battles for four-star prospects. On Wednesday he made the next stops in the ongoing spring coaches caravan tour, this time setting up shop in new enemy territory across the Mason-Dixon Line.

Franklin, once destined to be the next head coach at Maryland, was in Baltimore meeting fans, alums and former players as well as the media. Wile a contingent of regular Penn State reporters were there to capture the moments, it was the Maryland media that opened the door to questions about Penn State’s new Big Ten division rival, Maryland. Of course, Franklin being the deadpan coach he can be at times, had to ask a Penn State staffer if the Terps were on the schedule this season.

“Do we have Maryland on the schedule this year?” Franklin asked, according to The Baltimore Sun. “Yeah, we do? Somewhere back there.” Franklin said right now his focus is solely on the season opener in Ireland against defending AAC and Fiesta Bowl champion UCF. But nobody should be fooled into thinking Franklin did not know Maryland was on the schedule. He may even have the date circled in his mind. But as Franklin places a recruiting emphasis on dominating the state of Pennsylvania, Franklin is also taking on a side role as cartographer and extending Pennsylvania’s boundaries into neighboring territory.

History doesn't show? O'Brien had two pretty solid-to-okay seasons in Rhythmic Slappy Valley with a fair share of coaching hiccups. Franklin won 9 games in back-to-back seasons with Bowl wins at VANDERBILT...a historical doormat program. I'm not saying that guarantees he's going to succeed, but I certainly don't think he's shown to be any less than equal to Bill O'Brien.

But anyway, still a douche.

A head coach is only as good as the sum of his assistants, etc. I do think Franklin is a very good coach. However, I don't know if he and Ricky Rahne will be as good of QB coach as O'Brien was; and if Bob Shoop/Sean Spencer will be as good of defensive coordinator/defensive line coach that Larry Johnson was.
