James Quick?s season debut on the basketball court highlighted Trinity High School?s 62-30 romp over Phoenix Mountain Pointe on Thursday night in the 32nd annual King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale.

The Shamrocks, the defending state champions and No. 3 in The Courier-Journal?s preseason poll of coaches, got 13 points from Darryl Hicks, 11 from Miles Rice and 10 from DeMarcus Page in a game that merited a running clock after the lead reached 56-21 late in the third quarter.

Quick, a star wide receiver for the Shamrocks? state football champions, had been sidelined after suffering broken ribs late in that season. The 6-foot-2 guard came off the bench to play 16 minutes for Trinity (5-1).

Although he missed all six of his shots, he hit 3 of 5 free throws, grabbed three rebounds, handed out three assists and came up with three of Trinity?s 15 steals. The Shamrocks? pressure defense forced Mountain Pointe (2-4) into 25 turnovers, 17 in the first half.

Trinity wide receiver James Quick is Kentucky Mr. Football

Trinity had Plan B ready for the Class 6-A state title game just in case James Quick?s rib injury prevented him from playing.

Turns out the Shamrocks were able to stick with their original strategy against Pleasure Ridge Park.

After being cleared to return and catching a few balls during warmups, Quick went out and helped Trinity rout PRP 61-7 for its third consecutive state title. The senior wide receiver caught three passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns as the Shamrocks (13-1) won their 22nd championship.

For the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Quick, the game capped a stellar season including 1,416 yards and 16 TDs on 85 receptions.

It also clinched his selection as Kentucky?s Mr. Football by members of the Associated Press.

?He just has this passion to compete,? Trinity coach Bob Beatty said. ?My philosophy is, if you?re good enough, you?re good enough. His speed was great, he was a sponge for knowledge and it was an everyday process. Each year, he used that speed to get better and of course he has big receiving skills.?

Quick was still in bed when he got word Friday morning that he?d won the award, and it was an exciting start to the day.

?It?s a great accomplishment for me as a high school athlete,? he said after playing in Trinity?s 55-47 basketball loss to Nashville Christ Presbyterian at the King of the Bluegrass tournament. ?I?m really proud and thankful.?

Quick said Mr. Football was never his primary goal, but ?it was always something that you look forward to.?

It?s hard to imagine a much more successful high school career, with one state runner-up finish followed by three championships and the state?s most prestigious individual honor. Quick has also won the Paul Hornung Award and been named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

Attention now turns back to his closely watched recruitment as it hits the home stretch. He said he has cut his list to the University of Louisville and Ohio State ? the two teams that have long been out in front ? and plans to announce his decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5. Kentucky, Tennessee and Oregon were eliminated.

You could be absolutely right, and I would naturally assume that as well.

Doesn't seem like the kind of kid who trolls, though. We'll see...

I'm inclined to agree with you. On the other hand, this may very well have been the first time someone has asked him that question when he has not been in the city of Louisville.
