Javon Ringer: Offer the kid already!
written by Hubbard (6/17/2004)

Rivals posted some film on Javon that I haven’t seen before and it has reaffirmed my belief that he is deserving of an offer, as long as his grades are straightened out. This is especially true because I don’t think we have a RB on our roster that is like him (not including Kennedy because I haven’t seen much film of him). The thing that jumps out most about Javon, I feel, is his balance and his low center of gravity. I will try to describe his game to you, though words don’t do him justice. You can tell by the video he is on the smallish size, but at 5-9 (maybe a bit generous) and 190-200 pounds that have been reported that isn’t a bad thing for RBs especially in this case. He doesn’t hit the hole at 100mph, but he doesn’t hesitate either, he uses the time to find a hole, which he seems to do quite well because of his vision. Javon has deceptive speed he doesn’t seem to be a blazer, until you see him outrunning everyone on the field including those that had angles on him. I believe Dayton Chaminade-Julienne is Division II so the competition he is against are no slouches.
A lot of people have likened him to Barry Sanders and I can see the similarities, but he doesn’t have that abrupt stop and quick acceleration that Sanders had, but he does have some similar moves. His spin move was a thing of beauty (balance), but where he really excels is breaking arm tackles and keeping his legs churning. Note to the Big Ten next year (hopefully): get your shoulder pads on him and don’t use your arms. It’s amazing to watch him get out of some of the tackles and scrums that he does, which seems to be do to his low center of gravity (not to mention his strength). Put me on the list of being a believer that this kid is something special.

I agree, Hubs, nice videos! Ringer's talent on the field has never really been questioned, but his academics have. I doubt that he receives an offer until the coaches are certain that he will be qualified.

I agree completely! He plays bigger than his size, and pound for pound, he demonstrated the best stiff arm I've ever seen against Massilon. I agree, he's no Barry Sanders, but he is similar in at least one respect: He could get hit 2 yards deep in the backfield, and like Sanders, he could use elusiveness instead of power to turn it into a positive play.

I've seen him play in person, and he definitely is the real deal-amazing acceleration and open field moves. The thing is, I think the staff really doesn't want more than 1 RB in this class, and feels really good about it's chances w/ Maurice Wells. Then you have to consider Alex Daniels as well. If Ringer were a senior last year, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be offered. Rumor mill here in Dayton says Tennessee is making a big push.

I just don't see Daniels as a RB, I think he will be a good one, but on the defensive side of the ball. I like Wells as much as the next guy, but we have a couple Wells type in our backfield already. Even though he hasn't qualified yet, I still think we could show him a bit more love though IMO.
