Jeff Boals (HC Ohio Bobcats)

That is pretty down on their part. I think getting an assistant from my big-time program would be just as good as getting some HC's from a high level mid-program.

I think the AD is different now, but Groce worked out pretty well. So I too don't understand the logic.

Unless the logic is, get a retread who has very little shot of going to another school (like Frank Solich) and hope he stays a while.

Ohio's AD is the former Wichita State AD that hired Greg Marshall, he has kinda done very well hiring basketball coaches (Groce was his first hire here at Ohio)

Basically Schaus (the Ohio AD) has said that he believes Ohio is a premier mid-major basketball job and can hire young head coaches with experience. As over the weekend Ohio hired Saul Phillips (North Dakota State's basketball coach)

Good for Boals, I hope he does well at Stony Brook.

But as far as how good he was at OSU, if you look at the commitments that OSU has gotten ever since Boals joined the staff, the recruiting classes have not panned out very well. Boals came aboard in Spring 2009, by then Sully and DT were already committed to start at OSU in 2010-11. Craft committed in the beginning of June, about 5 or so weeks after Boals joined the staff, so it's not a case I would give Boals any credit for landing the recruit. The 2011 class was not up to program standards at the time, with Ross being the only one who played very well from the group. This 2011 class was the first one that Boals really had a hand in, and it was disappointing considering the staff put so much on that class, relying heavily on those guys without getting much help for them from future classes. They have consistently failed to land their top targets in recruiting lately and the past couple years have not been very successful in terms of performance on the court with their fallback options. When Boals was part of the recruiting effort, they brought in almost exclusively average to below average players, with the exception of Russell and Ross.

Then Boals was in charge of defense, but they are at a point now where they have no choice but to put a team out there that lacks the basic athletic attributes needed to have a strong defense across the board. Too many players who are too big and slow for the position they are asked to play on defense at the Big Ten level, guaranteed to give up loads of open 3s. It wouldn't be such a problem, but they also lack premier scorers so they have no way to make up for average defense. Where was the defense coach when putting together this team?

I listened to a Land Grant Holy Land iTunes podcast and the owner of 270hoops along with the Land Grant writer said that JB was one hell of a recruiter and was the first coach to offer Jerome Hunter of Pick North and have est. very good relationships throughout the state of Ohio. I think his departure probably hurt Matta more than we ever will know in listening to the podcast.

Then Nick Saban, Mark Dantonio, Pete Carroll, Tom Herman, John Groce, and Larry Coker among others should be in it.
Well, most of those guys are still active and so their specific forums (College football, pro football) are probably more appropriate.
The issue here just seems to be that there's not a non-Buckeye college basketball forum for our former BBall coaches to transition into when they leave the program.
