The Ohio University men’s basketball coach — a former star at Sandy Valley — barely played as a redshirt freshman, but used the experience to get better.

CANTON TWP. In the early 1990s, Jeff Boals went from being a BMOC at Sandy Valley High Shool to the DNP crew at Ohio University.

Instead of getting bitter, he got better.

The 6-foot-7 Boals was a first team All-Ohioan for the Cardinals in 1990, but after tearing his ACL in the North-South All-Star game after his senior year, he was forced to walk on at OU. He played 39 minutes — total — as a redshirt freshman, spending most of that season at the end of the bench, waving a towel with two other teammates.

“We called ourselves the DNP crew — Did Not Play,” said Boals, now the Bobcats’ men’s basketball coach. “We’d always do shooting contests in warmups and whoever scored the most points in warmups got to sit closest to the head coach.
