Jeff Hafley (DC Green Bay Packers)

I'm glad to see he gets solid reviews from smarter people than me, because as a Niners fan and being familiar with their D, this brought on a kind of "wtf?" reaction upon seeing it. Granted, I didn't get to actually watch a ton of Niners games, because they're rarely on tv, but their D stunk this year and the secondary was a shit show. Granted, outside of Sherman, they were depleted by injuries, but they intercepted 2, that's T-W-O passes all season. I guess I'll trust that the rave reviews are for good reason, and that his middling-to-poor results in SF were largely a function of talent. Guess time will tell.

My man Tyvis is a fan. That's enough for me.

But will the CBs start looking for the ball?

Perfect! A resume boasting of demonstrated coaching and performance excellence with the Tampa Bay Yuccaneers and the Cleveland Clowns! And it took him two years to graduate past the GA level?

What is that Buckeye Planet idiom? Paint the end zones???? (Not sure what that means.)

Maybe we should bring back Withers instead? tOSU would have beaten Clemson if not for a special teams fumble, which would have undoubtedly allowed tOSU to recruit Watson at QB, changing the course of history.

Read a lot and talked to traded some messages with some people yesterday and I am starting to feel like Day might have found the defensive version of himself here. The NFL guys have nothing but great things to say about Hafley. The guys who knew him from his college days can't talk enough about what a great recruiter he was. This feels much better than the "meh" hire many were making it out to be.

What will be really interesting is to see who is calling the plays...Mattison or Hafley? I've seen conflicting reports.

Seems like the only meh hire is Mattison but he makes sense if you are bringing in a young hot shot who's never been DC before to show them the ropes and provide some stability. Also he's not a meh Bill Davis, he's a meh he's a good coach and great recruiter but will retire in a few years.

If it's your first HC job, having some grey hair on your staff is a good thing. (I know LJ Sr is a vet)

Exactly. Bring in Mattison to stabilize things in the short-term. This is probably his last job and he can then turn the reigns over to someone like Hafley in 2-3 years. Maybe this idea is that this pairing will work better than the Schiano/Grinch pairing which didn't seem to work very well at times.

I think Schiano/Grinch didn't work also, because you have 2 coaches given the same position in name, and both coach the same position. I'm sure Schiano flexed his muscle since he was on staff longer and didn't appreciate his successor being hired, especially after he lost the Tenn job. We will never know who failed in making the call on White earlier, and imo the way he left for OU. I think Grinch wanted White to start and schiano overrode his vote and wanted Pryor/Wint, and was stubborn about benching them.
Mattison being a DL coach and Hafly coaching DBs doesnt have them at odds, imo
