Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

Kids like all kinds of stupid [Mark May]. I supported Jesse Camp on Mtv's "Wanna Be A VJ" contest in 1998.
Yes they do. And the liking of stupid shit matters when those kids are being used to win football games. You liking Jesse Camp had no bearing on MTV whatsoever. An elite recruit liking whatever uniform that a traditionalist doesn't, can mean winning a conference title or NC. Trevon Grimes or Tate Martell loving the black unis or whatever, has more bearing on coaches than message board dudes hating because they don't think that OSU should conform to Nike. In the next 10yrs I can guarantee that there will be some Buckeyes jerseys that go almost full Oregon because it makes money and it catches kids eyes. And Urban would care less what grumblings from the fan base think

Which alternate were you not high on?
I disliked the first one (UM 09) because it was cookie cutter and much more indicative of Nike than OSU. They had other uniforms that looked very similar, and back then Nike was using their pants and coloring them with some familiar team colors. It actually had strong styling overall but was more Nike U than OSU. I felt the same way about wisconsin 11. Again, pretty solid styling overall but it did not really look like OSU.

I thought the 2010 unis might have been the worst. They were a pretty close recreation of the old uniforms, but goodness were they ugly. I also really wanted them to wear the stripes instead, which was a strong design, so naturally I'm excited about these. I'm also fine with swapping out the hideous poop colored helmets they were considering before.
Every set has had its weak elements, but last year's blackout was the first where the total package stunk, from concept to execution. A lot of this hate comes from being an occasional spotter--we hate colored numerals on colored jerseys almost as much as sets lacking TV numbers--but some is disappointment that OSU gave in to the "kewl" all black everything trend.
I ended up getting on board with those because of the atmosphere that night. I agree those were sellouts, but the black out was pretty skrong.

The rivalry unis were pretty strong, and I thought the white variations held true to the form. I think the black still looked like OSU even if it was gimmicky, but it also came when OSU was generally wearing the ultra shiny helmets and oversized stripes and nuclear colored leaves.

Nike doesn't give two shits what the tOSU players think about the uniforms. They're not buying them. "Message board dudes" are. If middle aged men didn't like to wear them, they wouldn't be a thing.

kids love Oregon uniforms, even the hideous ones. They do not love the hideous unis from adidas nearly as much, because they don't like adidas.
I'm greedy. I want sizzle that isn't useless in five minutes. I want quality alternates. Thankfully they've done a pretty strong job with the last handful including this one.

High school kids love adidas. It's just as popular among them as Nike is. #3StripeLife is the little corny phrase that they use. As a reference, both Tate Martell and Tyjon Lindsey initially were saying they were going to go to schools with adidas jerseys because Nike is "weak." Now, we know kids don't pick schools because of jerseys, but adidas is very popular among kids. They feature high school kids and their teams in commercial and advertising all the time. Mike Weber and Cass Tech was featured in a commercial against St. X and Justin Hilliard a few years ago. Kids love that, and their apparel.

And this plays to the larger point, old guys who don't even really know what kids like are trying to tell them what they like is bad.

You're very mistaken, if Nike didn't care then why is The Opening the premier event for HS football at the Nike Headquarters?! Why is the Under Armour All American game seen by a number of recruits as being every bit as prestigious as the Army All American game, and has only been existence since 2008? It's because the kids think the brands are cool, the brands don't give a damn what the fans think!! Kids win games, message boards dont. Urban has stated in each interview that I've posted the reason behind alternate uniforms is for recruiting, if fans buy it cool, but getting elite players and winning games is better. Fans will buy pretty much what they're told, especially from a winning program

Everyone knows that flashy uniforms are a key factor in strong recruiting classes. Just look at Maryland. They've consistently outperformed Alabama on the recruiting trail for I don't know how many years.* Bama better get out of the stone age if they want to be competitive. A quick look at 24 of the top 25 teams right now, and I don't see Alabama anywhere. 'nuff said.

* Literally, I don't know.

I see what you did, and Alabama and Ped St. are the outliers. Flashy uniforms worked well for Clemson, FSU and tOSU... Uniforms of course aren't the only thing that draws recruits(which I've stated before), but they do help, hence why Urban has said so. And purposely leaked this weekend's uniforms when Shaun Wade and his family were in his office, that wasn't a coincidence...

The point is that kids will like a wide spectrum of things, including piles of terrible efforts as long as it arrives from one or more brands that they worship. That's a really easy standard to meet.

If Nike sales help fund more schollies, that's what it's all about.

Personally, I like this week's unis. Subject to change depending upon outcome.

Kids choose UA over Army for four reasons:
A. ESPN uses Disney as a hook
B. ESPN uses their personalities as celebrity coaches. They are much more accessible than whoever flies in to speak at the Army Awards Dinner.
C. Intersport/UA will pay for more family members to travel
D. UA provides directly provides a shit ton of gear. Army game has a contract with adidas for $ and apparel, but a large portion is used in the spring/summer for the parent company's camps.

Other than The Opening, Nike has pulled a lot of dollars AWAY from the high school camp circuit. They are down to licensing their name to Student Sports, which handles all the Regional Combines, and hosting The Opening for free on their own campus.

At the college level, using alternates is a pretty easy choice -- the team is "hyped", the recruits are "hyped", the fans want to feel like part of the team, so they buy the gear. Meyer wins, Nike wins, our egos win.

Over at the mall this morning since there are still a million hours until game time. Saw the throwback gear. Picked it up, looked at it, put it back on the shelf.

No thanks. If I'm paying that much money for Buckeye gear, I can do much better. The long sleeve t-shirt is alright, but for 40 bucks? Nah. 20 and I'd consider it, but I feel like that Music and Cannon Fire tag will come off or fray.

That's my rant for the day. I can see why young kids would dig the jerseys. They're not horrible compared to some of the other ones I've seen.
