Jim Delany (B1G Commissioner)

Not sure where to post this but sense the B1G Network is Delany's baby, I figured I'd put it here:

Why would they do this? Lack of subscribers?
I admit I know next to nothing related to media channel/cable provider relationships.

Power struggle thing imo.
See this a lot between channels and providers... especially as the traditional cable/sat model is challenged.
Comcat is probably lowballing so BTN is trying to put on the pressure. Realistically, a major weakness to these conference channels is programming outside of basketball and football season... betting this isn't a coincidence on the heels of Basketball season and before Football season starts.

If this hastens the day of true cafeteria choice of channels, I'm all for it. I'd love to be able to stream BTN without having to pay for some ridiculous "package" that also obligates me to the WWE Network, Oxygen and TruTV.
$15 a month for ESPN, 15 for BTN, 10 each for Fox, CBS, NBC. 15 for Netflix, etc etc. If you have one thing you want to watch and absolutely no one else, you should look forward to the a la carte system. If the giant gaps in your service are disappointing, then you're not going to like the end result or the bill to fix those gaps.

Just sayin': Delaney should be concerned about this too:

Two-Minute Drill: Urban Meyer at B1G Media Days

+ It’s “very concerning” that the Big Ten champ hasn’t made the playoffs in the last two years. “That should not happen.” But Meyer said he doesn’t know enough about the committee and the requirements. He’s not sure the committee lives by what the coaches have been told.

It's very clear the committee doesn't live by what is sold by ESECPN and what they tell the coaches (which I figure is similar)....

the CFP is run by the same people who ran the BCS. Add in that ESECPN carries each of the bowl games on their channels and also runs a channel for the SECSECSEC and ACC, you have massive conflicts of interest.

That doesn't mean Ohio State didn't shit the bed against Iowa because they absolutely did but to put in a team that didn't win its division or conference over another "Big 5" conference champion remains absurd, much like how absurd it was the year before then, and I hate to say this, the Pedsters should have gotten the same nod.

Teams that lose twice don't have an argument. That is, until we trade in the best regular season in sports for a overly inclusive one (at which point Bama will have to lose 3x before there's any consideration to omit them).

It is what it is....I think there's a massive conflict of interest and with ESPN basically running the whole thing from a TV standpoint, the SEC and ACC are going to be given the benefit of the doubt. Penn State and Ohio State aren't the greatest examples of it obviously.

There's also a reason (beyond far more important ongoing life events) that watching non-Ohio State games isn't going to happen much this year, at least until the system changes.

Every Power Five commissioner addressed injury reports and gambling in college football

Big Ten’s Jim Delany:

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about the changes in gambling that will obviously occur in the coming years. Couple things. First thing I would say is I think we’ve got great students playing football. Trust them. They’re young. We need to continue to educate them about the challenges associated with gambling and the importance of the integrity of the game. But I don’t think that they are more vulnerable today than they were before the Sullivan case. That’s the first thing I’d say. The second thing is I think we’ve got to double down on the educational element. I think we’ve done that over the years and we continue to do that.

“I think that we would prefer a federal framework that either omits college sports from gambling at the state level. And if that’s not possible, that there be some standardization of a framework so that college sports, high school sports, Olympic sports, those categories of sports receive some additional protection.”

Delany on injury reports:

“On the issue of player availability, I don’t call it an injury report as much as I think about it as player availability. Whether that comes out of an injury or whether it comes out of eligibility or comes out of some transgression of one kind or another, I think we need to do that. I think we need to do that nationally. And I think the reason we need to do that is probably with the exception of the home field, the availability of personnel is critical to people who are interested in gambling legally or illegally. And therefore, when players are unavailable, we should know that, if they’re probably or likely, I don’t have the model code, but I do think it’s something that we should do and probably should have done it before, but certainly should do it now.”

Use a VPN to convince them you're an international customer. I think it's $20/mo or something.
You get every game. Not just the BTN ones... every single game. Downside is streaming usually ~10s behind. Makes following along on BP or elsewhere a bit sketchy with spoilers.

Yeap. I dont watch tv though. So $20/mo, 4 months a year... for all the B1G I can get does the trick.
No way my mom or sister could deal with switching from DirectTV 500 channels or whatever it is to ala carte though.
