Jim Foster (Former Women's BBall Head Coach- Hall of Famer)

If there was a General Ohio State Athletics discussion...big-time expectations.
Not really. I don't think the expectations are that high for the women's program was all the high school talent that is in Ohio. Foster has no recruiting class for next year (no commitments... none) Also, we had some fairly good teams they never fared very well in the NCAA tournament. Unless something magical happens the Ohio State women's team will not be very good next year and the new coach will have their work cut out for them.

On another topic, I don't understand why they had to fire him. I mean he is 64 years old and they could have let him retire or go out under his own accord but maybe he would not accept that. I don't know but I feel sorry for the guy who has given so much to the program to be fired.

Winning percentage when fired by Ohio State: Jim Tressel .828; Jim Foster .772; Earle Bruce .754; John Cooper .715.

Just sayin': You have to put an asterisk beside Jim Tressel, he wasn't fired because he didn't win enough games and/or his winning percentage.

Re: OSU also did not immediately respond to The Lantern?s request regarding the financial implications of the split between OSU and Foster.

If Foster was fired or resigned he would ?not be entitled to receive any further compensation or benefits,? however, termination by OSU without cause would result in a $350,000 payment to Foster, according to his contract, which was set to expire June 30, 2018.

Foster was paid $477,000 between July 1, 2011 and June 30, plus $285,000 in additional compensation, according to his contract, which The Lantern obtained on Tuesday. Foster?s contract states that he was to make $502,000 in base salary, plus $300,000 in addition compensation for the current fiscal year.

If the above report is correct Ohio State is getting off pretty cheap on his firing.

Essentially Foster got lucky. Everyone wants to point to the Big 10 Championships and recruiting. This guy got lucky.

1. He had the LUCK of two centers from Columbus being Top 10 (or so) recruits in Lavender and Davenport. Foster is EXTREMELY deficient in recruiting and it shows. Once the hometown freebies were gone, there was nothing to replace them.

2. You know what sealed it for him on one of those two centers? Someone close to her got a scholarship by being the team manager. Teams such as UConn weren't willing to do that.

3. The Big 10 has been down during this stretch. Sorry, that's the truth. Purdue and Penn State both won national titles somewhat recently and then hit a rought stretch. Now that those programs are on the rise again its no coincidence that OSU can't run through the league anymore.

4. The writing was on the wall. Ohio has some GREAT talent coming through and he has 0 commitments for the next class. He is not that well liked in high schools. Also, I know a girl that played for him at OSU; so don't think I am just pulling these comments from no where. She said he hated recruiting.

I guess I just don't feel as badly as Litl does. With recruiting being the lifeblood of a program and knowing what Foster's thoughts and efforts were in that area, I just can't feel that badly.

Well, to be totally fair, Lavender attended high school in Cleveland but all of your points are spot on.

Thanks. I apologize for missing that.

Also, I should balance the recruiting comments by saying that he did put great effort into recruiting Sammy P.

More info. I have to believe that a booster was willing to fund this.

Former Ohio State women?s basketball coach Jim Foster was terminated from his post without cause.
In a comment to The Lantern, OSU athletics director for legal affairs Julie Vannatta confirmed the nature of Foster?s departure from the university, which previously had not been made clear. The former Buckeyes coach of 11 years was fired and will now receive installment payments that could amount to as much as $350,000.

I have a few comments to add after reading the comments after Foster's dismissal.

1. Amy Tucker is not coming back. She and Tara are a couple. Not sure about Julie Plank but when Burns was hired, Tara suggested Beth and not Julie. That is why Beth came. Remember that Andy Geiger hired Tara away from us. That is why there was no real interview process at that time. Read Jim Massie's blog.

2. Foster did not like to recruit. True. Debbie Black was the coach behind bringing in Sammy. Look over that past 5 years or so. The talent was from out of state. Exception Alston, last year's Miss Basketball. Beach is a great player also but out this past year with an ACL

3. Incredible record: Foster has an 100% graduation rate for his career. That is why I defended him until this year. It was clear that the players were not developing over the year.

4. Yes, Mrs Smith is a former basketball player. I am hoping that Gene and Miechelle will bring in the right person. Anger Geiger spoke to some boosters after he hired Jim and explained in detail why he hired JIm. He also took full responsibility for the "mistake" of Beth Burns. You don't see that very often.

Job evaluation of former Ohio State coach Jim Foster does not appear to indicate job was in jeopardy
By Pat Brennan

Published: Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Former Ohio State women?s basketball coach Jim Foster landed on his feet after being fired by OSU and will now coach the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga women?s team. It remains to be seen whether Foster had fair warning that his old job at OSU was in jeopardy.

The final performance review of Foster?s 11-season stay with the Buckeyes, administered by associate athletic director Miechelle Willis in June 2012, doesn?t appear to indicate that Foster?s departure was looming. Criticisms discussed by Willis during the March 19 press conference to announce Foster?s firing are mostly consistent with the final performance evaluation, with exception to the fact that he was rated as having met the vast majority of contractual expectations.

Using the terms ?exceeded expectations,? ?proficient? and ?opportunity for improvement,? Willis rated Foster to have been at least proficient in all three of his key job responsibilities (recruiting, conference and national competitiveness, and managing the program). Foster was also graded on more specific criteria listed in 48 sub-categories in which he received the ?opportunity for improvement? designation (the lowest grade possible) just four times, earning him an overall ?proficient? rating.
