Jim O'Brien (officially erased and paid cheat)

ESPN Radio & TV News is reporting the OSU Basketball Coach Jim O'Brien has been dismissed from The Ohio State University.

Paraphrase: "Jim was involved in some type of NCAA violation regarding an improper benefit provided to a recruit who family was in dire straights. The recruit did NOT sign with OSU"

This is as yet unconfirmed at OSU.

Nixon, has a thread started (Nixon's Thread) in the Basketball foum on this topic. He noted that WTVN announced (approximately 2 pm) that there was a "Major Shakeup" coming for the basketball program and a news conference to be held at 3pm today. I just heard on ESPN the above news and 1460, then broke into the ESPN programming to reiterate the news.

Great job on the "scoop" Nixon .. I know we all (especially Nixon) wish it was better news than this.

Ex-Buckeye O’Brien turns down offer from Celtics
Monday, May 22, 2006
FROM WIRE REPORTS

Citing personal reasons and poor timing, former Ohio State coach Jim O’Brien yesterday declined the Boston Celtics’ offer of an assistant coaching position.
O’Brien said his decision "had nothing to do with the Celtics," praising the organization, executives Danny Ainge and Leo Papile, and coach Doc Rivers for their professionalism.
"They were great to me," said O’Brien, who was men’s basketball coach at Boston College for 11 seasons (1986-97) before coaching at Ohio State (1997-2004). "I’m flattered they had the interest that they had.
"It really is about me and a personal thing with me. The timing is not great for me to make the commitment that I would have to make to do that job properly. It’s almost as simple as that.
"I live in Boston. I like the Celtics. I hope they do very, very well. I’m always pulling for them. [The decision] has all to do with where I’m at now."

When Will This Thing Be Done?

Per the Dispatch - The hearing to determine if Ohio State owes O'Brien money has been moved further down the line to August 28th (originally slated for the 5th of June).

A hearing on damages in Jim O’Brien’s lawsuit against Ohio State University has been postponed from June until August so the judge can decide whether it’s needed.
Ohio Court of Claims Judge Joseph T. Clark is expected to determine by mid-June whether he agrees with requests to find in favor of one side or the other without a trial.
Clark ruled in favor of O’Brien in February after hearing testimony in the breach-of-contract lawsuit by the former OSU men’s basketball coach. Clark ordered a second hearing to determine whether Ohio State owes O’Brien any money. That hearing, set to begin June 5, now is scheduled for Aug. 28.
O’Brien says he’s owed $3.6 million, based on the contract he had when the university fired him in June 2004 after he admitted giving a potential recruit’s mother $6,000 when her husband died in 1998.
The university says he is owed nothing, pointing out the numerous sanctions the NCAA imposed March 10 on the school’s athletic program, most for violations in the men’s basketball program during O’Brien’s tenure. Whatever money might be owed to O’Brien would be offset by the more than $1 million the sanctions are costing the university, OSU’s motion states.
"Both common law and common sense require that coach O’Brien’s demand for further compensation be rejected," the motion says.
O’Brien’s motion, however, says the NCAA decision has no bearing on the case because the question before the court is simply how much O’Brien is entitled to recover based on his contract. The NCAA investigation was ongoing when the breach-of-contract trial was held in December.
Brian Murphy, one of O’Brien’s attorneys, said yesterday that no settlement talks have been conducted with Ohio State. No matter what the judge decides, he said, the case will be appealed.
