Pretty interesting to read that Ari Wasserman article where Tressel talks about the 4th down call in the 2nd quarter of the '06 title game. "If we don't get this, boys, we are going to lose this game."

He saw what was obvious: we were getting blown up on both lines of scrimmage.

Hadn't read that, went to look it up:

http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2015/09/what_did_jim_tressel_say_in_th.html

"Jim Tressel is on the headset in the second quarter going, 'If we don't get this fourth down boys, the game is over,' " Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck, a grad assistant on that Ohio State team, said in his press conference this week. "And I've never heard Jim Tressel ever panic or ever say anything (like that). You knew you were in trouble."

President Tressel
THE MAN WHO REBUILT OHIO STATE FOOTBALL IS BACK WHERE HE FIRST BUILT HIS LEGEND, AND THE CHALLENGE IS UNLIKE ANY HE'S EVER FACED.

A few months after Jim Tressel was named president of Youngstown State University, he and a close friend, Paul McFadden, went on a fundraising trip. McFadden is the president of the Youngstown State University Foundation, an independent non-profit that raises money for scholarships, construction projects and academic programs. He had been working on one potential donor for years. This donor, an elderly man in Florida, had been reluctant, and McFadden had only been able to have short conversations with him on the phone. One day last year, McFadden called the donor. I'm flying down from Ohio, he said. I'm going to have our new president with me.

The donor perked up. "I want to meet Jim Tressel," he told McFadden. After that meeting, the man put a $2 million donation to the foundation in his will.

Another gift, a $2.5 million donation to the engineering school, came from a 95-year-old steel baron. Tressel met with him too. Many times. In fact, during YSU's first year with Tressel as president, the foundation hosted more than 100 fundraisers at Tressel's home. He's gone on at least eight trips to raise money. Fundraising has doubled. And he's just warming up. "To be honest," says McFadden, "we really want to ride his back."

Jim Tressel speaks in a fairly monotone voice, but he has a gift for connecting with people. He remembers names and details with astonishing recall. He'll talk with people beforehand, and then bring them up by name during a speech. As a result, people don't just turn out to see him, they stay. They listen. And then they give. "It's his ability to communicate and empathize. He never talks about himself," says McFadden. "People like him."

If you met Jim Tressel, you'd like him too.

Jim Tressel’s Super Bowl Five
The long-time Ohio State coach and current university president at Youngstown State on his “five guys” playing in Super Bowl 50

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Jim Tressel still rocks a sweater vest. Different University, different job, same V-neck.

On Tuesday evening, The MMQB Super Bowl 50 Road Trip visited Tressel at his spacious office on the campus of Youngstown State University in northeastern Ohio, where the long-time Ohio State football coach now serves as YSU’s president.

It didn’t take long for Tressel to gush about his current program’s latest accomplishment: the university’s first Rhodes Scholar. “I got as excited about our Rhodes Scholar as I did when Troy Smith won the Heisman!”

So how does Tressel fit into our Super Bowl road trip? Five players he brought to the Buckeyes—Carolina’s Ted Ginn, Andrew Norwell, Corey “Philly” Brown and Kurt Coleman, and Denver’s Bradley Roby—will play prominent roles in Super Bowl 50. “Who else can say they have five guys playing in the game?” he asks. “Look it up. I want to know if any grandpa-looking coaches have five players in the Super Bowl.”

Tressel spent the next hour talking about his former players, his life at YSU and his year with the Colts, featuring an injured Peyton Manning…

EDIT: Not sure I've ever seen it on the record, but JT lets slip what everybody knew about his "resignation:"

Peyton is just a gentleman, the nicest guy. He and Anthony Gonzalez, who played for me at Ohio State, were really close. In fact, I’ll bet Peyton was within the first five people who called me after I got fired.

TROY SMITH AND JUSTIN ZWICK WOULD'VE FOUGHT IN A PARKING LOT IF NOT FOR JIM TRESSEL

Smith set the scene while speaking at a charity event in Youngstown featuring Jim Tressel and eight other Ohio State athletes.

From vindy.com: Smith recounted his rivalry with backup quarterback Justin Zwick, which led to a parking lot showdown. To Smith’s surprise, Tressel was there, saying there would be no fight and to take his [bottom] to his dorm.
