John Groce (HC Akron Zips)

Ohio U returns all their starters from this year's squad, right?

Groce made a base salary of $250,000 during the 2011-2012 season. He also was given $25,000 for radio and television appearances and $25,000 for public appearances. He earned bonuses of $5,000 for a conference winning record, $10,000 for winning the MAC tournament championship, $20,000 for winning two NCAA tournament games and $20,000 for being one of the final 16 teams remaining in the NCAA tournament.

Illinois owes Weber $3.9 million after firing him with three years remaining on his contract.

I would submit that the second quote makes the answer to the first quote irrelevant. Running away with the MAC and making a second trip to the Sweet 16 wont get you the Kentucky job.

To what job might Groce aspire if not a solid Big Ten school?

As the author of the first quote, I am more interested in the second domino that might fall, Jeff Boals to OU. As I mentioned a few weeks ago in Boals' thread, Miami has been high on Boals. I think it would be a mistake for Boals to take the Miami job were they to offer, as their recent recruiting has not been great. OU, on the other hand, would be a better opportunity and fit for Coach Boals.

I understand the logic but their recruiting has been suspect because of the system they run. I have talked to numerous players (Mid-major level) who refused to go to Miami because their offense was so boring. Academically they are the best in the MAC and with the right coach they could be relevant.

As for Boals, I agree with you, and everyone else, that he should go to OU.

Illinois' deal with Ohio's Groce appears imminent
Some hitches in hiring new coach need to be ironed out

By Shannon Ryan, Chicago Tribune reporter

10:11 p.m. CDT, March 27, 2012
Illinois fans thought the 21/2-week search for a new basketball coach was coming to a close Tuesday as athletic director Mike Thomas and Ohio coach John Groce expressed mutual interest in reaching a deal.

While the hiring process hit a snag Tuesday and added to the ongoing quest, sources said Groce still appears in line to be the man to replace fired coach Bruce Weber. If not Groce, sources said Reggie Theus waits in the wings.

"No decision has been made yet," Illinois spokesman Kent Brown said, relaying a message from Thomas.

A flight from the University of Illinois' airport to the Ohio University airport in Athens, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon was canceled as sources said the hiring process hit a bump. Some sources said board of trustees members displeased with the selection stepped in and slowed the process, while another source said negotiations became an obstacle.

The university denied any interference took place.

Cont'd ...

It seems like there's a lot of dissension and angst in Illinois over this search. One of the Illinois fan message boards (and quite a few articles) is full of suggestions that some of the trustees and a lot of Chicago HS coaches are dead-set against Groce because they want a black coach. Even that one of the trustees suggested Michelle Obama's brother (who is apparently the basketball coach at Oregon State, with a pretty poor record) for the job.

Just a sample:
If things go as planned, we?ll hear Wednesday morning about an afternoon press conference, then we?ll go to Champaign for the long-awaited introduction of Ohio University?s John Groce as Illinois? new basketball coach.
If things don?t go as planned, Groce will have become mortified at the negative reaction to his impending hire, will have run like hell, and Mike Thomas will have to wonder if there?s anyone worth a risk who actually wants this job...

It's just not the money, or else he would have ended up at Nebraska. But it has to be the right fit. Illinois is the right fit plus a ton more money (even though Ohio is trying to keep him by doubling his salary)

As Ohio alums, we are just hoping the chaos the past few days scares Groce away from the Illinois job. Then again, I don't see that happening... but just saying what some alums are hoping for.

I don't know things might be a little brighter for OU since some of the Illinois Board of Trustees want Reggie Theus and some of the current players want one of the assistants retained or possibly even given the HC position. Maybe Groce doesn't want to walk into that mess.

As things keep getting delayed... I really think Groce might walk away from it. Also word out of Ohio is they are trying to figure out how to pay Groce as much as possible.

All I know is when I win the Mega Millions this Friday I will make a donation to make sure Groce stays :pimp:

When I win it, I'm going to burn OU to the ground and plant some soybeans. They probably won't take, but it's worth a shot.
