Johnny Manziel (unemployed)

Well yeah, but more like a guy who was successful and is maybe in the twilight of his career/isn’t getting NFL offers anymore. Johnny is a never was and the CFL is supposed trip over their feet for the guy? This clown wants to make demands as if he has alternatives. It’s not like he can say “pay me what I want or I’ll go elsewhere!” He has nowhere to go. I guess we’ll see who is more desperate: Johnny (for a job) or the CFL (for Johnny :slappy:.)

There's a lot of other sports where this model has proven to not be effective.
Hiring stars in their twilight ends up being a bad proposition. Occasionally they put out 1 or 2 good years at a lower level, but often their interest level is significantly less along with their declining physical abilities... and they'll still demand top dollar via their agents. Leads to overpaying for a has-been whose mailing it in. See Bowe.
What you want are the diamonds-in-the-rough who slipped through the cracks at the higher level. Their peak will be lower than the declining star, but they'll put out for the team/organization. They will play for years as major contributors. They'll integrate into your locker room, team culture, and national culture (not really an issue for Canada). They'll serve as lAmassadors for more than 1 or 2 years. With College Football, those guys are everywhere for CFL... if not for rules requiring Canadians they'd probably staff their entire teams with kids who just didn't make it onto an NFL team.

That sounds like Johnny. He wants top dollar aka a team overpaying. He mailed it in. Didn’t even study a playbook.

Johnny didn’t “slip through the cracks.” Nobody wanted him. Ever. Not one team took a chance after seeing him in the NFL. A team might have took their chance drafting him if not for the [Adam Sandler]“hey! Here’s a good pile of shit!”[/Adam Sandler] Browns but once he was gone from Cleveland every other team was like “nah. We’re cool.”

but they'll put out for the team/organization.

No.

They will play for years as major ???contributors.

No.

No.

Does anyone really thing Johnny can do any of these things?

For clarity sake, I was in no way arguing for Johnny... not sure why anyone would be interested in him given his personal issues and lack of giving a shit.
Just pointing out that going after stars on their last leg is a short-sighted strategy that has failed time and time again. Whether it's basketball, soccer, or football... you're better off getting the young motivated journeyman (who can be a star at your level) than you are getting the washed up vet mailing it in.

For a guy no one in the NFL wants, he sure has a high view of his leverage. I guess he's going to wait for the XFL. Good luck with that.

Johnny Manziel Canadian Football League prop bets released

Screen-Shot-2018-05-29-at-8.13.08-AM-718x490.png

Barring an unforeseen injury, Johnny Manziel will be making his much-anticipated return to the gridiron this year as he suits up for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. It’s not the NFL but it’s a step in the right direction for a player with immense talent that the NFL likely still has reservations about following his brief stint in Cleveland.

Online sportsbook BetDSI has released several prop bets for Manziel’s CFL debut. It should be noted that there are 18 regular season games in the CFL, 12 players on the field at a time, and the field is both wider and longer — which makes for more scoring opportunities and potential passing yardage for CFL quarterbacks.

The prop bet at the end of the list appears to be somewhat of a cheap shot directed at Manziel but also goes to show the amount of skepticism regarding his return to football:

Johnny Manziel starts in Week 1 of 2018 regular season for Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Yes +250
No -300

Johnny Manziel is arrested before February 3, 2019

Yes +1200
No -2000
