* On Troy Smith’s performance against PSU -- “Troy had the best grade he’s had. He was in the low 80s. Joe Daniels is a tough grader. He is very meticulous in what he asks of the quarterbacks. Had Troy not had that one fumble, he probably would have graded over 85 percent and that is a winning grade.”

Well it also shows that Smith's performance is not as simple to digest as some would argue...Out of roughly 50 offensive plays(penalties are not graded I assume) TS made mistakes on 8-10 of those plays. We all saw the fumble, the incompletions were drops, and he only attempted 8 passes. That means there are 7-10 misreads, poor decisions, or lack of carrying out fakes.

When you only attempt 8 passes and complete 6 of those, yet do not grade out, that speaks volumes about what the average fan does not know.

Don't take this as a rip on Smith. It is intended as a rip on all of the kneejerk fans we all know and love.

REPORTER: How do you assess Troy's performance on Saturday?

TRESSEL: Troy had the best grade he's had. I think he was in the low '80s, which Joe Daniels, as I mentioned before, is a tough grader, and he's very meticulous about what he asks of his quarterbacks. If Troy had not had that one fumble, I wouldn't doubt that he would have graded over 85, which over 85 is a winning performance. And it was one of those lessons that the coach called a bad play, it wasn't open, you throw it away. Instead, it wasn't open and he took a step back, and when he took a step back, the contain rush man was able to strip him and we ended up with a turnover. But Troy will learn from that. He didn't do it the rest of the game that particular way and he knows that was the difference between he having a winning performance and not, but I thought his progress was good.

Transcript of Tressel's Press Conference

Typos seem to be prevalent today. In the link, Youboty is named offense player of the week.

Interesting. I think the BP needs to get their ass in gear and get access to these detailed reports on all Buckeye players. I mean, what else am paying this place for:shake:

They're making you pay!? Ah yes. Rookie mistake. I'll send you a user/pwd so you can get it all for free. There's a loop in the system I've found that lets you get everything for free. Just give me about $20 or so and I'll send it to ya.

Grad - From my vantage point at the 'Shoe, the one out pattern to Holmes was thrown late. I think Holmes could still have caught it, but it was delivered late; not as bad as the one to Ginn versus Indiana (which should have been 6 the other way). I also saw one other time when he ended up running the ball that he missed an open receiver early (I believe Gonzales). It still seems that Troy doesn't go through progressions, but hopefully that can improve with more experience.

That is exactly my point Prof, when he hands the ball off or runs himself on 42 out of 50 plays yet does not grade out, it shows how much we do not know as fans. Just from watching the game, I would have bet my paycheck he graded out.

Shows why I am vBroke

This is a strange twist. I am used to all the posters saying a guy looked bad, and the coaches saying he did well. This is a case of we thought he looked good, but the coaches didn't

Grad, you are 100% right. Even with JT conservative offense, you know he plans on throwing more than 10 times in a game. There were checkoffs, and reads that TS missed. However, that is stuff that will come in time.

Both Buckiprof, and Osugrad21- You know I agree with the fact that maybe he doesn't go through his progressions all the time. However, He threw the ball as Holmes was turning around. I don't think it was an out but rather something where he settled down because he was standing still when the ball hit him square right in the hands. For a guy like holmes to drop a ball even if its thrown just a tad late is unacceptable ya know? Also Osugrad21- Many things can contribute to him not grading to a winning performance just not on his throws.. Seriously when I was in high school they had the same grading system and they would actually also look at what your first steps where when the play started, and if they weren't right then well you got a negative or a bad play remark. So many things contribute to him not having above an 85. Also you stated he had 2 incompletions which is just my point.... The kid shouldv'e been 8-8? which in my books is fine by me? Now Yes I probably have to believe they called maybe 3-5 extra passing plays that Smith probably took off on, but with a guy like Smith if its not there he'll take off to aviod the mistake or negative yardage play. Also you have to account for the fact that Smith Knows he has a very young, and unexperienced line. You have to believe that before the play starts when they call a pass play he's wondering if the Oline will hold up or will he have to take off. Now Zwick stood back there better at times but would get killed and would often throw careless and pointless passes which sometimes resulted in turnovers. I'd rather have a kid know he can pick up 5-6 yards and keep the ball on our side than have a kid stand tall and make a wrong decision. Point I'm trying to make is if its not there then well make something outta it instead of throwing an incompletion. Also for whoever talks about Gonzo being open. I know this might sound stupid! haha but ok you guys ever play Ps2 Ncaa 2005 and you start scrambling with your QB and right when you cross the line your recievers seem to be running the field wide open? Yeah well it happens all the time to me, and I wouldn't doubt that sometimes you guys will see people open because Troy has already made his mind up in running the ball and the DB's are now trying to tackle him. Just a thought and IMO is very true sometimes.

Well BuckI, if you weren't so busy busy constantly defending your man, you would have realized my post was supportive of Troy. Notice where I said I would have bet my paycheck that he graded out after watching the game? The point of the post was to show fans how much we don't realize upon our viewing and how much more is available to the coaches when breaking down film.

Possible minuses in grading include not carrying out a proper fake after a handoff, poor footwork, lack of hustle, etc etc.
