Kellen Winslow Jr. (not a good dude)

Winslows take on Cartoon

McManamon on the Browns

Winslow contract is no laughing matter to Browns

Internet cartoon has Miami tight end in stitches

By Patrick McManamon

There's a cartoon going around the Internet that features the Poston Brothers, Kevin and Carl, negotiating the contract for Kellen Winslow Jr.

It shows the Postons sitting across a desk from Browns coach Butch Davis, who asks ``How are you doing?''

The Postons then berate Davis -- ``How do you think he's doing?'' says Carl Poston. ``He's the Chosen One. How do you think he's doing?'' -- and ends with the Browns providing the Postons and Winslow fruit and drinks and a massage from women wearing bikinis.

There's more.

Each meeting includes the Postons screaming at Davis for some perceived slight -- ``I don't see a fruit basket. What if he wanted a banana? What if he wanted an apple? An orange? A mango? You're trying to starve our client'' -- and ends with the Postons saying: ``I'm outta here!'' before they slide away.

At one of the last sessions, Davis starts by saying he's hopeful the parties can get a deal by training camp.

The Postons burst into laughter and walk out.

Davis and the Browns might not appreciate it, but most people -- including the principals -- think the cartoon is hysterical (it can be seen at www.footballguys.com/04bang_negotiation.htm.

``It's hilarious, man,'' Winslow said. ``I was laughing my butt off.''

Yes, the cartoon is a parody, but it also reflects the prevailing thinking regarding the Browns' upcoming negotiations with Winslow about his contract. With the Postons doing the dealing, and with new Browns president John Collins doing one of his first player deals, it's not expected to be easy.

Part of the concern is that the team's recent changes have seen Carmen Policy to resign and salary-cap expert Lal Heneghan to be fired. The Browns now have Collins and Trip McCracken, who has never done a big deal, talking contract with two of the most notorious agents in the business.

Those two got Dennis Northcutt signed, and the Browns are hopeful Winslow will be in camp on time.

``There's plenty of people here who can do the (negotiating) job,'' Davis said.

Winslow chose the Postons after a long process in which he and his father, Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow Sr., allowed five agents two hours each (no more) to explain themselves to the Winslows and two family friends -- a law school professor and an investment expert. Why choose the Postons?

``Just real strong people,'' Winslow said. ``Real strong black people. They don't let people get to them. You always hear bad things about their name -- Poston did this, Poston did that -- but they're real strong and they stick to what they know.''

A year ago, the Postons did get Detroit receiver Charles Rogers into camp on time, so a holdout is not guaranteed. But Carl Poston seemed to be laying the groundwork for his demands when he said on draft day that Winslow could have been the first overall pick.

Can you say ``first-overall-pick money''?

``I'd love that money, but I'm the sixth pick and it's all about your market value,'' Winslow said. ``I was on a lot of people's boards No.1, but I'm the sixth pick. So fifth, sixth-type money... I'm going to let my agents handle that.''

The concern around the league is that in their eagerness to get a deal and prove they can get a deal, the Browns might overpay.

If they do, they'll have 31 other teams angry at them.

But if they can pull it off and get a fair contract for Winslow and get him to camp on time, 31 other teams will be impressed.

I'm weak what can I say...

As a Browns fan I'm going to like this guy. I don't care about his rants and stupid stuff like the elevator with Stepanovich. He'll get over that stuff once he and Garcia win a Superbowl or something. I take it as a good sign that he could laugh at this cartoon. It shows that he really is human with a sense of humor, which is something he'd never really shown people before.

I know this sounds bad, but I actually like the Miami program a little bit since a lot of the kids that play for them are from all around where I live now. I think that's kind of cool. I like going to the HS games myself, wearing my Buckeye gear, and jabbering with the kids in the stands about how great Ohio State is. See, I'm just helping win hearts and minds for OSU and the kids down here really do like OSU a lot. The more South Florida kids they see doing well at OSU the more they like to talk about it too.

I would like to see us play against them more often, and I guess we will due to future scheduling. In fact, a nice victory in the Orange Bowl this year would do wonders for our recruiting down here, I'm sure.

I think Winslow may have a ring in his future, but if Garcia's going to get one, they'd better hurry. I think he'll be eligible for social security before the end of his four year contract.

He's old and a bit banged up. I'd really like to see a Cleveland QB actually be good. It's been a while. Danielson and Kosar were the last vestiges of good QB in C-Town. Couch and Holcomb showed flashes of brilliance. Couch looked like Joe Montana last year at Pittsburgh on Sunday Night TV with Theisman deep-throating him the whole game, then the next week I think he threw a couple of touchdowns to the OTHER TEAM. It was like whoever came in off the bench always had the hot hand. This seems to be a trend in the NFL. The starter seems complacent and the JV guy wants to come in and make plays. Garcia seems to always be trying to make plays. I can see why he played bad against the Browns last year. The Browns had a pretty good D, just a shitty O, quite the reverse of the year before.

I was talking with Hank Goldberg last night and he said something to the effect that Winsolow was at a little kids signing event recently. He asked to have Browns Security help him get away from the event. Hank said, you just don't do that kind of stuff in Ohio....

Anybody read anything about this?

It wasn't a "little Kids signing event"

Man, I read about this somewhere.. Can't find it.

Anyway. The Event was something other than a signing.... Anyway.. he wasn't the only athlete there.. anyway, he got security to help him get out without signing autographs.

Regardless its a bush league move

Story from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Davis would land on feet if he's fired
Sunday, June 27, 2004

Word is Browns first-round draft pick Kellen Winslow Jr. alienated some folks during a recent youth football camp sponsored by the team when he reluctantly signed a few autographs before fleeing. But what really had parents and the young campers grumbling? Winslow reportedly asked security personnel to accompany him as he left the autograph seekers. That's a "Keep away, peasants" type of stunt that's usually pulled by prima donna singers and entertainers, and not Cleveland athletes.

KWII, is winning the hearts of Browns fans already I see. :(

This shit goes back quite a ways if IIRC. First KWI gets carried off of the field vs. the Dolphins and is seen as a hero. NO FOOTBALL PLAYER worth a shit would let someone carry him off of the field unless he was really injured. Did the two guys carrying him play? Pretty sure they did.

Second, KWII signs to Miami after signing day on TV, just for the limelight. Surely someone else can fill in the gaps in that story. Back then I was quite the stoner, so I only remember bits and pieces...

His father was (and still is) every bit the prima donna his son is. After all, he was in the studio for fox last year saying "I'm tired of Ohio State having games handed to them"...real professional. So, much as I despise KWII, I know where he got it from, and I blame him more.

His, and the attitude of Miami's players, intimidate a lot of college teams. The crap he got away with there, he will not get away with in the NFL. I am very anxious to have him meet his former alumni Mr. Lewis. That's a war worth watching. Good luck Mr. SmartAss.
