Ken Griffey Jr. (MLB HOF)

Griffey returns to Reds lineup, but leaves with stiffness

August 5, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Ken Griffey Jr. returned to the Cincinnati Reds' lineup Wednesday night for the first time in nearly four weeks, then left in the fifth inning with stiffness in his right hamstring.

Griffey went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. The team said his early exit was a precaution for the veteran slugger, who hadn't played since July 10, when he tore his hamstring.

Griffey, activated from the disabled list Tuesday, played right field instead of center against the San Francisco Giants. Ryan Freel moved from third base to right when Griffey left.

Before the game, manager Dave Miley planned to keep Griffey in right field through this weekend's games in Colorado.

``It's just less ground to cover,'' Miley said. ``We'll let him get his feet on the ground.''

Griffey, in the midst of a resurgent All-Star season in which he hit his 500th career homer, didn't mind changing positions. He's batting .251 with 20 homers and 60 RBIs. ``I want one of those scooters to ride out there on,'' Griffey said with a grin.

Your thoughts........

Junior you got your 500th, now retire

youre a fool. theres nothing i can say about your post that will make you realize how wrong you are
buckeyenation: I assume you are commenting on my post, my question to you is this:

Why am I a fool and what is wrong with my post?

Griffey is injury prone, he has a big contract...if the reds tried to trade him, they would get considerabley less than market value in return due to the history of injuries....Here is some info that might change your mind about your statement:

The Cincinnati Reds total payroll is: 46,615,250.00
Ken Griffey Jr. Salary: 12,500,000.00 for 2004

The reds have approx 27% of their payroll invested in a player who in five years has produced the following:

103 homruns, 292 RBIs....break it down it for 4.5 years or lets just say 5.....21 HRS and 58 RBIs.....he has made 53 million for the past five years that is $500,000.00 a homerun for his last five years.

I fail to see the foolishness in being sarcastic about a player who is grossly overpaid for his production, at this point it might be foolish to believe he is a shoo in for the hall......

I agree with 27. IMO the Reds should trade him to an AL team so that he can DH for the rest of his career. He does have some trade value which is better than eating the salary like you suggest. I'm sure they could get a good minor league prospect for him at the very least.

I dont agree at all, I believe they will get nothing close to the value for him, they have already tried to trade him but his salary and injury problems have hampered them, but I am almost 100% sure that if he does get traded the reds will probably have to accept some of his remaining salary to complete the trade and that is what I meant by dumping him and eating his salary.

No wonder the reds have no pitching, they cant afford it.

Your wrong buddy. I do not think there are any teams that would be willing to pay him 12.5 million or a portion of that next year to sit on their bench or play half the year. History is History. Injury prone is injury prone. Come man! Be real. The reds traded away all their highest paid players last year. What or who did they get for them that is worth a shit right now? Not really anybody. Damn minor leaguers, go for the seasoned veteran that can play now! Win now! I want some new owners that can restore the BIG RED MACHINES!!:mad2: :smash: :bicker:

By "dump him and eat his contract" I thought you meant just cut him and let someone pick him up for free. I agree that they would have to throw in some cash with the deal, but they could get something. Do all of you think that he would get hurt as much if all he did was DH? I think he would stay healthier. Just get him a bike to ride in the dugout and tell the third base coach not to send him home unless it isn't a close play. He is still too young to give up on totally.
I'm a Tribe fan anyway so I could care less about the Reds.

ugh. to the anonymous person who said my "argument" was weak because i had no afterthought:

first i would like to point out that my post clearly stated there would be no afterthought, but since you felt the need.....

junior took LESS money to come back to the city he grew up in and play for his dads team. during the first season of DEATH THREATS he still hits, what, 40+ home runs?

then he has a freak injury that happens while he is playing his heart out, you will NEVER see him pull up for a bloop or not run full out for that extra base because he plays balls to the wall all the time. THIS is what gets him hurt. then hes so eager to please the idiot fans who boo him, that he comes back too soon and gets hurt again.

every single injury he has sustained in a reds uniform has been the product of playing TOO HARD. yeah thats a real crime. yet in the same breath you use to diss junior, you will turn around and dog a right fielder who held up on a ball that landed right in front of him.

now that hes finally healthy he had an all star first half....he was back to having fun, producing, the reds were in wild card contention and he gets hurt going after a ball that he couldve easily held up on, let 2 runs score and still be healthy. needless to say he STILL almost made the catch AND he ran the ball down so he could throw it to the cut off man BEFORE he went down.

he comes back after possibly the most disappointing injury to date (because it caused him to miss the allstar game and he was just starting to win back the fickle fans like yourself) only to feel some tightness in his hammy. obviously he came back too soon again, just because he wanted to play.

but thats not enough for you is it?

Nation: where is the post you are refering to? anonymous person ????

I dont think its a question of him putting 100% effort on every play, but its the reality that he cannot stay healthy and my only point was that he is overpaid for his production and I think that he will continue to see injuries, so the question is if he is worth that much money for a player who the last three years has not been on the field the majority of the time when your team could use pitching in the worst way.

I respect him as a ballplayer but I think at this point in his career, it doesnt justify the big contract he has.

anonymous means i dont know who it is......ie reputation points.

and theres no such thing as "injury prone" nobody is PRONE to injury, as much as that phrase is tossed around. what does junior do different than others who arent "injury prone"? ill tell you what.....he plays harder.

you saw his season this year while he was healthy. you dont think hes worth that much money? youre crazy.

I was the one that posted on your reputation points. So! I am not arguing about his skill and if he is worth the amount of money he is getting paid when he is healthy - KEY WORD HEALTHY! Damn, I would love to see Griffey play a full season. You have to remember that I am a Cincinnati Reds fan till death! I support my team and its players one hundred percent! Griffey is awesome to watch when he is HEALTHY. I never said that you shouldn't play hard but I will give you this to eat on: When you get in your car, I am sure that sometimes you drive really fast whenever the road permits it. Right? You do not get in your car and drive 120 around a curve that should be driven at 35mph. Griffey trys to dive for balls that are 120 feet in front of him, makes it there bearly, and then smacks his body on the ground and injures his shoulder, come on. So what the ball drops. 2 runs given up or 2 months on the DL. I'll take 2 runs all day. He will make up for those two runs by smacking a 3 run homer out to win the game! Come on man. Griffey is the man when he's playing but most of the time he isn't!

One more point- Griffey is making roughly 12.5 million a year. He has been here for about 5 years. He was played about 2 1/2 to 3 years worth, if that. If he is a team player like he says he is, then he should ask the team to restructue his contract(so he can give back some of the money he was making while he wasn't playing, ie on the DL, hurt) so that the team can go spend about 25 million on some good starting pitching! That's what I would do. I would feel guilty about sitting on the bench collecting a paycheck for months at a time while I'm injured. Earning the big bucks! :tic:

very poor analogy. you should be going 120 mph in sports at all times. there are no speed traps in sports. if you could see into the future and know that you are about to hurt your shoulder diving for this ball, that would be one thing. but the second you hear the crack of the bat and your first instinct is "Hmmmm, should i go 120 mph trying to get this ball or should i slow down and get it on the bounce letting 2 runs score?", well then you shouldnt be playing major league baseball.
Griffey trys to dive for balls that are 120 feet in front of him, makes it there bearly, and then smack his body on the ground and injures his shoulder, come on. So what the ball drops. 2 runs given up or 2 months on the DL. I'll take 2 runs all day.
baloney. ive never seen him rediculously dive for balls he couldnt get. when he sees the ball....he goes at it. thats why hes a great defensive center fielder.

and im sure had he held up on all those balls that he dove for and got injurred...you would be leading the brigade of people who understand why he didnt lay out for them. if he pulls up short and takes it off a bounce, the fans and cinci media label him as somebody who doesnt care. hes screwed both ways. without a cyrstal ball there is no way you would say..."eh, its just 2 runs, at least he didnt get hurt diving for that ball." theres NO WAY. dont even claim you would.

i was at a game where he struck out twice his first 2 at bats and got boos from the "fans". now its the bottom of the 9th and they are down 4 or 5 and he hits a 2 run shot, and hes everybody's hero? no, those fans dont deserve ken griffey junior.
