Kevin McGuff (Head Coach The Ohio State Women's Basketball)

?I know of him,? Reynoldsburg High School coach Jack Purtell said on Thursday. ?He called me last night. You could hear the excitement in his voice with having the opportunity to be at Ohio State and to lead the program.?
McGuff is a native of Hamilton, north of Cincinnati, who coached Xavier for nine seasons before taking the Washington job two years ago. Purtell hasn?t met him because he had never coached a player that interested McGuff in his Xavier years. That has changed.
?We have one of the top juniors in the country right now in Alyssa Rice,? Purtell said. ?He?s a hands-on recruiter. He?s really interested in her.?
Rice, a 6-foot-4 post player, was of interest to former Ohio State coach Jim Foster, as well. The Buckeyes were on her list, along with Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.
The same night that Purtell heard from McGuff, so did Tim Cogan. Cogan coached Kettering Fairmont to the Division I championship this season with top junior forwards Kathyrn Westbeld and Makayla Waterman.
?He reached out last night,? Cogan said. ?He?s from Ohio, and he?s excited to be back. I do know him. He was pretty darn good when he was at Xavier.?

...

Cincinnati Princeton coach Jill Phillips has known McGuff for 11 years. An intermediary had contacted her for McGuff, she said.
?I was excited that he got the job,? Phillips said. ?He knows the region well, and I think he?ll do a great job of recruiting. I think our kids would remember the job he did at Xavier.?
Two of those kids are junior point guard Kelsey Mitchell and her twin sister, Chelsea. Kelsey is a top-10 recruit with dozens of scholarship offers, but the sisters plan to play together in college. Foster recruited both, Phillips said.

Go get 'em Coach McGuff!

New Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff is in the early stages of putting together a coaching staff for the upcoming season.

His top assistant at the University of Washington, Mike Neighbors, is the new head coach for the Huskies. None of McGuff's former assistants will follow him to Columbus. There are no hard feelings.

"They're kind of West Coast people," McGuff said today. "And I think they'll do a wonderful job out there. Mike's going to do a heck of a job as a head coach. I think professionally for all of them that it's going to be a real good situation."

This means, of course, that McGuff is forming a new staff. This isn't really so new, either. Neighbors is the only coach that followed him from Xavier to Washington in 2011. The whirlwind that McGuff described in his introductory new conference at Ohio State has continued.

"I got the job here and I went recruiting right away," he said. "I've been getting calls and texts. But I didn't really get off the road until Tuesday.

"Then the first thing I wanted to do was meet with our players, individually. So I did that the last two days. In between that, I've been reaching out and have gotten a great response from people that want to be part of the program."

Some former members of fired coach Jim Foster's staff remain a possibility although assistant coaches Debbie Black and Ed Baldwin are known to be looking elsewhere.

"I wanted to interview the staff that still is left here," McGuff said. "It will probably early next week when I have a more narrow list of candidates. But I haven't hired anybody yet."

Ohio State roots could count.

Update for McGuff's coaching staff hires:

He hired former Duke assistant coach Joy Cheek as the new recruiting coordinator. He also retained Patrick Klein, an assistant to former coach Jim Foster for the past three seasons.
...
"I?m really excited to keep Patrick in our program," McGuff said in a release. "He?s an incredibly hard worker and is very passionate about Ohio State ? specifically this program. As an Ohio State graduate, his knowledge of the school and this team along with his connections the state of Ohio and the Big Ten will allow us to move forward in a really positive way."
...
"Joy Cheek is one of the brightest and most talented young coaches in all of college basketball," McGuff said. "With her pedigree as an outstanding player and coach at Duke she has the necessary experience to immediately impact our program. In her role as recruiting coordinator she will put us in position to attract the type of student-athletes that will allow us to compete at the highest level of women?s basketball. Joy also is an outstanding young woman who will be a terrific mentor to the young people in our program."

Beth Howe, a co-captain on the Ohio State Big Ten Championship team in 2004-05, joined the staff of new coach Kevin McGuff today as the director of basketball operations.
"Beth had just the background I was looking for in our director of operations position," McGuff said. in a press release. "As a former player she has a passion to see this program grow into one of the very best. She?s bright, energetic and organized and will help me make sure that we run this program in a very professional manner."

Taft boys basketball coach Mark Mitchell has been named an Ohio State women?s basketball coach, according to Ohio State.

Mitchell was named as the third Buckeyes? assistant for head coach Kevin McGuff.

?I?m very excited to add Mark to our coaching staff,? McGuff, a former Xavier coach, said in a statement. ?He brings tremendous experience as a basketball coach and will play a large part in player development and helping craft an exciting style of play. Mark is a proven winner and has had great success as a head coach and helping young people develop on and off the court.?

Mitchell?s daughters ? guards Kelsey and Chelsea are still officially uncommitted to a college program despite this morning?s news, according to the family. Kelsey, The Enquirer player of the year, is rated among the nation?s top players in the 2014 class and has several significant scholarship offers.

?Being able to work for Kevin McGuff and The Ohio State University is a dream come true,? Mitchell said in a statement. ?Coach McGuff and Ohio State have afforded me with an opportunity to continue my growth and development as a coach while molding our student-athletes into successful, productive people. I am looking forward to the opportunity to help Coach McGuff bring the women?s basketball program back to national prominence.?

Hm. It may be completely legit, but I hate even the appearance of possible impropriety.

I wondered about that myself, but "Coach Mitch" has an impressive resume:

Mitchell, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the top high school and AAU levels, comes to Ohio State after spending the past 11 years as the boys varsity head coach at Taft High School in Cincinnati, where he amassed a record of 221-50 (.815).

Mitchell went 22-3 in his first year at Taft, winning the city championship after inheriting a program coming off 10 consecutive losing seasons. During his tenure at Taft, the Senators won eight Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference titles, nine sectional and four district titles and a Division III state championship in 2011. For his efforts, he was voted CMAC coach of the year eight times and the Cincinnati Enquirer coach of the year five times.

Prior to his appointment at Taft, Mitchell served as an assistant coach at Winton Woods High School from 2001-03 where he helped the Warriors to a Division I state runner-up finish in 2002. He also was an assistant coach on the All-Ohio Girls basketball team from 2011-13.
