Kevin (Tim “Asshat” Racadb) Warren (ex-B1G Commissioner)

KEVIN WARREN HAS A LONG LIST OF ITEMS TO TAKE CARE OF AS THE NEW BIG TEN COMMISSIONER

Like suggesting that it's about fucking time SEC, Pac 12, and ACC teams/fans learn how to travel for playoff games played in Big Ten territory? That would be great for the conference and for the concept that these are NATIONAL games, not Sun Belt Tourism promotions.

What have I missed here? They're not pure as the driven snow?

Oh, and Kevin, insist on having the CFP games in NATIONAL - not REGIONAL - locations. Let the folks from the ACC/SEC/PAC discover travel games.

The PAC-12 has no prayer of ever making the CFP. They have been routinely out of the discussion no later than the 1st weekend of November each year other than the 1st year with Oregon.

Maybe not this year or next (as Clay Helton may not be the answer); but, eventually USC will be a contender. There is too much tradition there and too may top prospects in California for them to not "come back".

B1G Could Play ‘Independent’ Of What Other Conferences Do This Season Per Commish

Kevin-Warren.jpg

While we are still sitting on a calendar that has yet to even reach the second week of May, it is impossible not to see the pages beginning to flutter as the college football season hangs in uncertainty.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shut down spring sports and stopped winter sports in their tracks. Fall sports are still a few months off, but they are looming.

With so many states under different distinctions of stay-at-home orders, the ability for one conference to even operate for a college football season while they are spread out over several states is up in the air right now. Plans are being put in place to make it happen, but every contingency has a contingency this far out.

One of the major questions regarding the Big Ten playing football this season may have been answered on Monday by B1G commissioner Kevin Warren. Speaking with Big Ten Network host Dave Revsine, Warren was asked if he thought the conferences would work together in returning to play, and also if he saw a scenario where some leagues may come back this year and others would not.

The thought is out there that if every school can’t play college football this year, then no schools would play. Warren seemed to nix that idea, leaving it open that the Big Ten will do what they need to do, even if it means doing things “from an independent standpoint.”

“[The Power Five commissioners] had a call this morning and I think what I had said, and I made it very clear even back to my press conference in June which seems like 10 years ago, is the fact that we will always be the Big Ten. And the Big Ten is the Big Ten for a certain reason,” Warren said.

“Which means we will always — to the best of our abilities — do what we feel is the right thing to do. Sometimes that may mean that we’re with a group. Sometimes that may mean that we do things from an independent standpoint. But I will always say that my goal is to make sure that we feel comfortable that we do the right thing and that we remember that we have a responsibility with our brand, with our universities.”

WELCOME, COMMISH! The Big Ten picked one HELL of a year to welcome in a new conference commissioner, but all things considered, I think Kevin Warren's been doing a fine job – so fine that more often than not, I forget he's even the new Big Ten Commissioner.

But he's certainly been doing things.

Welcome to the job! Now, save Big Ten Football from a global pandemic!

That's a mighty tall order to hand a new commissioner, but he genuinely seems to be taking it in stride.

I don't spend my days thinking deeply about the on-job performance of conference execs, nor am I naive enough to think my opinion on the subject matters even a little bit, but unsolicited and unqualified opinions are my brand, so I offer my sincerest approval by the simple fact that the ship is still sailing.

From Warren's letter:

On Monday, May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a proud Black man, was killed by a member of law enforcement in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile, Emmett Till. The list goes on and on.

Prior to joining the Big Ten Conference as Commissioner and relocating to Chicago, my family had lived full-time in the Minneapolis area for over 15 years as I worked as an executive with the Minnesota Vikings in the National Football League. Our kids were raised in Minnesota and attended school in Minnesota before leaving for college and the people of the great state of Minnesota are part of the fabric of our entire family.

As a Black man, I pray every day for the health and safety of my wife and children, especially during interactions with law enforcement. We continue to see inequality and deep divide regarding how members of the Black community are treated compared to the rest of society and too often, the results have been horrific and senseless. Such racism and inequality are pervasive, not just endemic in law enforcement.

Meaningful change will only occur if, as a nation, we are united, resilient and determined to create difficult, uncomfortable dialogue and take significant tangible action. We all need to strive to make the world a better place. One person, one family, one city, one state, one conference, one country.

George Floyd’s death cannot be in vain.

I have made the decision to create the Big Ten Conference Anti-Hate and Anti-Racism Coalition and invite student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and others to join me. I have already received powerful notes of support and interest in joining this coalition and look forward to partnering with the existing diversity councils on our various campuses. It is critical that our student-athletes possess their rights to free speech, their rights to peaceful protest and we will work to empower them in creating meaningful change.

We must listen to our young people. Our children and future generations deserve better. We are either part of the problem or part of the solution. The Big Ten Conference will be part of the solution as we actively and constructively combat racism and hate in our country.
