The Keys to the Keystone - Pennsylvania's Top Recruits in the Class of 2006

Like Ohio, the state of Pennsylvania generally produces several dozen Division I football prospects each year, and the class of 2006 is no exception. Much of the talent this year is concentrated in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, with perennial powerhouses Gateway, Woodland Hills, and Central Catholic each having several highly-touted players. I have detailed below some of the top talent in the Keystone State; please note that the rankings are my own, and are based on the prospects' respective offer lists and my review of articles, film, and other data concerning the players:

1. LeSean "Shady" McCoy, RB, Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt (5' 10", 193 lbs, 4.4 forty) - McCoy is unquestionably the top recruit in the state of Pennsylvania, and he may be the number one running back prospect in the entire country. Student Sports named him the top sophomore in the nation after his stellar 2003 season (2,568 yards for 30 TD's), and Tom Lemming rated him the country's top overall offensive prospect after his equally productive junior campaign (2,828 yards for 33 TD's). LeSean currently has over forty offers, including one from Ohio State. Although Shady would be an excellent compliment to "big back" Chris Wells (Ohio's top prospect for 2006), it appears that the Bucks are just one of many schools that will receive a cursory glance from this super blue chipper. Miami (offered) is McCoy's "dream school", and Penn State (offered) is the local favorite; LeSean might also be interested in becoming the heir apparanet to Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma (offered).

2. Pat Devlin, QB, Exton Downington East (6' 3", 194 lbs, 4.7 forty, 3.8 GPA) - Devlin is a current member of The Rivals 100, and he was rated by The Sporting News as the number 4 overall prospect in the nation for the class of 2006. The accolades are justified, as Pat has thrown for 5,200 yards and 48 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Devlin has excellent mobility and speed, good pocket presence and touch, and decent arm strength. Although he is listed as a pro-style quarterback, Pat can make accurate throws both from the pocket and on the run, and he has enough quickness and elusivity to be a legitimate rushing threat. Devlin has offers from many major programs including Miami, Virginia, and Maryland, and claims to be wide open at the present time. However, both of his parents graduated from Penn State (offered), so the Nits will be tough to beat.

3. Darrin Walls, CB, Pittsburgh Woodland Hills (6' 1", 175 lbs, 4.4 forty) - Walls is one of the best cornerback prospects in the nation, having recorded 110 tackles and 9 interceptions over the past two seasons. Darrin attended two Ohio State (offered) games last year, and he hails from the same school as current Buckeye wide out Devon Lyons and 2006 receiver prospect Wesley Lyons (Devon's younger brother). However, Walls seems more likely to follow former Woodland Hills stars Steve Breaston and Ryan Mundy to Michigan (offered). Notre Dame (offered) is also a favorite, and several other leading programs may get a look from this top Pennsylvania prospect.

4. Dorin Dickerson, ATH, Imperial West Allegheny (6' 3", 205 lbs, 4.5 forty) - Although he is probably a better defensive prospect, Dickerson wants to play offense at the next level (1,065 yards rushing, 517 yards receiving, 28 total touchdowns in 2004). In any event, Dorin is an excellent all-around athlete, and in 2004 he was named to the Associated Press all-state first team as a "specialist" (he literally plays all over the field for his high school team). Dickerson exhibits good skills as a running back / receiver, but special skills on the other side of the ball; with his excellent hands, vision, and field presence, Dorin could be an outstanding ball-hawking free safety in college, and he possesses the requisite size and attitude to provide valuable run support. If he can add 15 or 20 pounds, he would also be an ideal OLB prospect. Dickerson's list of favorites changes frequently, but the constants seem to be Michigan (offered), Ohio State, and Pitt (offered). A solid offer from OSU could put the Bucks at the top of Dorin's list.

5. Jeremiha Hunter, LB, Manheim Central (6' 2", 210 lbs, 4.55 forty) - Hunter is an outstanding outside linebacker prospect (143 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 interceptions in 2004) who also plays fullback on offense (1,100 yards and 22 touchdowns). While Jeremiha was an all-conference selection at both positions, he was named to the Associated Press and Pennsylvania Football News all-state first teams as a linebacker, and he projects as an OLB in college. There is a classic Ohio State - Michigan (both offered, camp) recruiting war for this kid, with the Wolves currently in the lead; West Virginia (offered) and Iowa may also be in the mix.

6. Jared Odrick, DL, Lebanon (6' 6", 290 lbs, 4.9 forty) - Odrick is an athletic and energetic player with a great frame who will likely end up as a strongside DE, as he lacks the sheer mass and raw strength necessary to excel as an interior lineman. For his size, he is very quick and mobile, and he demonstrates good lateral pursuit. On offense, he also displays good footwork and balance both at tackle and tight end, but his future is probably on the defensive line (his preferred position). Jared is being recruited by many top programs, and he currently has offers from Penn State (favorite), Miami, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and several others.

7. Zach Frazer, QB, Mechanicsburg (6' 4", 216 lbs, 5.0 forty) - Frazer is a pro-style quarterback with good footwork, nice touch, and adequate arm strength. As a junior, Zach was named Pennsylvania's Player of the Year by Associated Press after he completed 285 passes out of 441 attempts (64.6%) for 3,674 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 9 interceptions. Although several major programs were showing interest, Zach made an early commitment to Notre Dame, where he will be groomed to be the successor to Brady Quinn.

8. John Maddox, DB/WR, Philadelphia West Catholic (6' 4", 170 lbs, 4.5 forty) - In 2004, Maddox made the Rivals all junior team as a safety; however, he also plays receiver, and may end up there in college, as he is a bit light and thin for the safety position. John has offers from, and interest in, several major programs, including Notre Dame (childhood favorite), Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Syracuse; he has also shown some interest in Ohio State, but the Bucks have yet to offer.

9. Jason Pinkston, DT, Pittsburgh Baldwin (6' 4", 275 lbs, 4.9 forty) - Pinkston is a big, athletic two-way lineman who will most likely play defensive tackle at the next level. Jason has a good motor and a nose for the football, as evidenced by the facts that he amassed 100 tackles and 7 sacks in 10 games last season. Pinkston has an exemplary offer list, with Michigan, Ohio State, Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, and several other major programs offering him a full ride. Jason has been reluctant to name any favorites, but it is clear that the Buckeyes are still somewhere in the mix.

10. Nate Byham, TE, Franklin (6' 4", 220 lbs, 4.6 forty, 1470 SAT) - A rangy and athletic prospect, Byham is not a physically imposing player, especially for a lineman. However, he displays excellent hands, decent speed, and shifty moves after the catch, and these qualities make him a serious offensive threat (45 receptions for 883 yards and 9 TD's in 2004). Unless he can add some bulk (at least 20 pounds), Nate will probably end up switching from tight end to wide receiver in college. On defense, Byham was a productive MLB, with 91 tackles, 14 TFL's, 9 sacks, 3 INT's, and 4 fumble recoveries last season; however, his future is definitely on the offensive side of the ball. Nate currently has 15 offers, including his four favorites - Pitt, Miami, Iowa, and USC.

11. Tom McEowen, DT, Feasterville Neshaminy (6' 4", 280 lbs, 5.1 forty) - Although he doesn't look like much of an athlete on the field, Tom McEowen possess a surprising amount of speed, quickness, and agility (forget the forty time - this kid boasts a 32" verticle and a 4.34 shuttle). And when Tom gets to the ball carrier, which is frequently (89 tackles, 15 TFL's, 5 sacks as a junior), he hits hard. A non-stop motor and the proper football mentality are bonuses. Although he is somewhat overshadowed by top DL prospects Jared Odrick and Jason Pinkston, McEowen might be the best of the bunch in college. Tom currently holds offers from Penn State, Northwestern, Rutgers, and Boston College (all favorites), but his list will get longer as more recruiters discover this diamond in the rough.

12. Jeremy Ricker, QB, Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt (6' 1", 195 lbs, 4.62 forty) - When you're the Bishop McDevitt quarterback, you pretty much take the snap and hand off to all-world tailback LeSean McCoy, right? Wrong! Last season, QB Jeremy Ricker threw for over 1,800 yards and 17 TD's to compiment McCoy's nearly 3,000 yards rushing, and his strong performance also earned him a spot on The Rivals 100 list. Ricker has good field vision and nice touch on his deep throws, but doesn't have a lot of zip on the short and intermediate passes; in the right system (say Oklahoma), he should be fine. Jeremy's favorites are Notre Dame, Miami, Maryland (offered), Oklahoma (offered), Florida, Syracuse (offered), Oregon (offered), and Michigan.

13. Aaron Smith, ATH, Pittsburgh Gateway (6' 0", 180 lbs, 4.5 forty) - If bloodlines mean anything in football, then Aaron Smith has a bright future ahead of him - he is related to New England Patriot All-Pro CB Ty Law (a Michigan grad), current Pitt Panther DB Josh Lay, former Penn State Nittany Lion WR Terry Smith (who is also his head coach at Gateway), and 2005 Penn State five-star CB signee Justin King (who is a Gateway grad). As the recruiting process heats up, Aaron will have two "problems" to solve - finding a school to please all of his various relatives, and finding the best position to show case his many talents (at Gateway, Smith has played QB, RB, and WR, but he projects as a DB in college). Aaron's current favorites (all offered) are Boston College, Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, and Virginia, but Ohio State and Michigan would enter the picture if they came through with a ride.

14. Wesley Lyons, WR, Pittsburgh Woodland Hills (6' 6", 205 lbs, 4.65 forty) - No one's stock is rising faster than Wesley Lyons's - a month ago, he was flying under the radar, but now he boasts offers from several top programs including Ohio State, Miami, Penn State, and West Virginia. Although Lyons had a fairly productive year as a junior (33 receptions for 600 yards and 7 TD's), his size and potential are what have begun to attract the college recruiters. Wesley is the younger brother of current Ohio State sophomore wide out Devon Lyons, and the smart money says that "little" Lyons will follow his brother to Columbus. However, Wesley also really likes Miami, and a few other schools may get a look as well.

15. Chris Hanna, OL, Pittsburgh Gateway (6' 4", 292 lbs, 5.0 forty) - Hanna plays left tackle at Gateway, but projects as a guard in college. He excels as a run blocker (he helped pave the way for 5-star athlete Justin King last season), but has little experience in pass blocking. Chris might be the best pure OL prospect in the state this year, as both Jared Odrick and Jason Pinkston project as defensive linemen in college. He is teammates with ATH Aaron Smith and LB Dan Loheyde, who are also top prospects in Pennsylvania for the class of 2006. Chris has a smattering of offers, including Duke, Illinois, Rutgers, and Akron, but he is still waiting to hear from his favorite programs, namely Pittsburgh, Maryland, Ohio State, Purdue, and Virginia. With the state of Ohio having so many top-flight OL prospects this year, it remains uncertain whether this somewhat raw (and underrated) talent will receive an offer from the Bucks; however, with a strong showing at summer camps and a solid season this fall, Chris's stock will undoubtedly begin to rise.

16. Greg Webster, LB, Pittsburgh Woodland Hills (6' 2", 225 lbs, 4.7 forty) - Webster attends the same school as DB Darrin Walls and WR Wesley Lyons, both of whom are also top prospects in the state of Pennsylvania. Greg is a physical specimen who makes a lot of plays (134 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 interceptions as a junior in 2004), and he has the "search and destroy" mentality to man the middle of the defense. Currently, Webster has offers from Pitt, Virginia, and West Virginia, but he is waiting to hear from some other top programs such as Ohio State and Michigan.

17. Nate Nix, LB, Pittsburgh Thomas Jefferson (6' 3", 205 lbs, 4.6 forty) - Nix is a speedy linebacker prospect (125 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 INT's) who also plays fullback on offense (869 yards, 4 TD's). Although he lacks the superior instincts and athleticism of Dorin Dickerson, Nate will nevertheless be one of the top LB's in Pennsylvania, and he should generate plenty of interest before the end of his senior season. Nix led his team to a state AAA championship last season. Currently, he holds offers from Pitt and Iowa, and has serious interest in Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Purdue.

18. Dan Loheyde, LB, Pittsburgh Gateway (6' 2", 220 lbs, 4.6 forty) - Loheyde is a hard-nosed MLB prospect who fights off traffic well and then delivers a rock-solid hit. Despite the fact that he lacks "plus" speed, Dan has good vision and anticipation, and he makes a ton of plays (130 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 INT's in 2004). Dan has already made an early commitment to Pitt, thus becoming the first Gateway player in 17 years to choose the home town school.

19. Jason Kates, DT, Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt (6' 2", 324 lbs, 5.28 forty) - Although he has earned a spot on The Rivals 100 along with teammates RB LeSean McCoy and QB Jeremy Ricker, Kates has yet to distinguish himself through either his production (50 tackles, 10 TFL's, 6 sacks in 2004) or his athleticism (5.28 forty, 20" verticle, and only 11 bench reps at 185 pounds). However, he is a wide body who is big enough to bull his way through the line and disrupt a good number of plays. Although I personally feel that he is a project, Jason has a nice offer list, including rides from Maryland, Michigan State, Pitt, Notre Dame, Minnesota, and N.C. State; he is still waiting to hear from Miami, Florida State, and Penn State.

20. Brent Carter, RB, Pottstown Pottsgrove (6' 3", 190 lbs, 4.55 forty) - As a junior, Carter rushed for over 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns in only 7 games. On the defensive side of the ball, he has played free safety and cornerback. His high school coach (former WVU offensive lineman Rick Pennypacker) thinks that Brent could add 20 or 30 pounds to his frame; if so, Carter could be an excellent free saftey prospect down the road. Brent currently has offers from West Virginia, Rutgers, Boston College, and North Carolina, with the Mountaineers being the team to beat.

21. Ashton Cobb, DB, Monaca Center Area H.S. (6' 0", 195 lbs, 4.59 forty) - Cobb is a DB prospect who also plays some running back and receiver. Although he covers the field well, he doesn't deliver the knock-out hits that you'd like to see from a free safety, and he probably doesn't have the speed necessary to play corner. Currently, Ashton has offers from Akron, Kentucky, and Indiana, and has interest in Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, and Iowa. A tweener who needs to show well at summer camps in order to garner some big time offers.

22. Scott Corson, DT, Johnsontown (6' 5", 280 lbs, 4.9 forty) - Corson is a hard-nosed player with a good motor and decent speed. Although he is a two-way tackle in high school, he projects as a DT in college. Scott made an early commitment to Pitt, selecting the Panthers over Michigan State.

23. Travis McBride, RB, McKeesport (6' 1", 195 lbs, 4.5 forty) - McBride is the number two pure RB prospect in Pennsylvania, behind super blue chipper LeSean McCoy. While Travis has posted solid numbers (1,117 yards, 10.3 average, 19 TD's in 2004) for a top notch program, he has received little attention on the national scene. To date, Iowa is his only offer; his favorites are Ohio State followed by Michigan and Virginia Tech. Travis is another talented kid who needs a strong showing this summer and fall to earn some serious offers.

24. Jeff Minemyer, TE/DE, Ebensburg Bishop Carroll (6' 7", 240 lbs, 4.95 forty, 4.0 GPA, 1390 SAT) - A "big body" project (only 6 receptions for 86 yards and one TD in 2004) from a small school who needs work in the weight room (only 7 bench reps at 185 pounds). However, several schools obviously feel that this raw talent he can add weight and strength and develop his technique, as he has already received offers from Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, and Rutgers. Despite the impressive offer sheet, Jeff will wait to hear from Penn State and Pitt before making his decision.

25. Nate Williams, MLB, Pittsburgh Central Catholic (6' 2", 220 lbs, 4.7 forty) - As a junior, Williams was an Associated Press and Pennsylvania Football News first team all-state selection from the AAAA state championship squad (16 - 0, and ranked the number 6 team in the nation by Student Sports). Nate makes plenty of plays (105 tackles, 10 TFL's, 4 sacks, and 4 INT's last season), but he might be a bit small and a step slow to take his game to the next level. Another LB in a class loaded with quality LB's. Nate is looking at several schools (including Ohio State), but he has no offers at the present time.

HM. John Malecki, DT, Murrysville Franklin Regional (6' 3", 270 lbs, 4.9 forty) - Moves well (76 tackles, 21 TFL's, 7 sacks), but could use more mass and power; committed to Pitt.

HM. Tyler Tkach, DE, Slatington Northern Lehigh (6' 3", 240 lbs, 4.95 forty, 4.4 GPA) - Lacks ideal size and speed; has offers from Pitt, Georgia Tech, and N.C. State.

HM. Da' Rel Scott, ATH, Plymouth-Whitemarsh (6' 1", 175 lbs, 4.38 forty) - Super athlete (10.4 in the 100m) with no offers to date; 40 TD's over the past two seasons.

HM. Elijah Fields, ATH, Duquesne (6' 2", 200 lbs, 4.5 forty) - This safety / receiver prospect has offers from Pitt and West Virginia; 600 yards, 14 TD's last season.

HM. Justin Hargrove, RB/LB, Pittsburgh Baldwin (6' 4", 230 lbs, 4.52 forty) - Big and athletic, but recovering from ankle surgery; offers from Pitt and Akron.

HM. Josh Neubert, DE, Lansdale North Penn (6' 4", 243 lbs, 4.7 forty, 3.8 GPA, 1300 SAT) - a solid student-athlete; has offers from Northwestern and Boston College.

HM. Anthony Parker-Boyd, QB, Malvern Great Valley (6' 0", 192 lbs, 4.49 forty) - Speedy dual-threat QB (949 yards rushing, 1,815 yards passing); offered by Duke.

HM. Brad Kanuch, ATH, Johnstown Westmont Hilltop (6' 0", 171 lbs, 4.5 forty, 3.8 GPA) - Small but quick athlete plays RB, WR, and DB (1,400 yards rushing, 223 yards receiving, 5 INT's in 2004); offered by Boston College.

HM. Desmond Brentley, QB, Pittsburgh Perry Academy (6' 2", 215 lbs, 4.6 forty) - A sleeper in a strong QB class; 2,117 yards, 20 TD's, 62.3% in 2004.

HM. Clem Johnson, ATH, Carlisle (5' 11", 182 lbs, 4.5 forty) - Undersized athlete plays QB in high school; may get some looks as a DB or WR prospect.

With the exception of the phenomenal class of 2004, when Ohio State signed four of the top prospects in Pennsylvania (WR Devon Lyons, TE Rory Nicol, OL Kyle Mitchum, and OL Jon Skinner), the Bucks have had little recent success in the Keystone State. Although much of the state's talent will undoubtedly sign with local schools Penn State and Pitt, and national powers like Michigan will swoop in to land a few prospects, Ohio State has a legitimate shot at several players on the above list. Obviously, now that he has received his Buckeye offer, WR Wesley Lyons would seem to be the most likely candidate, as he has often stated that he would like to follow his brother Devon to Ohio State. Although Wesley will look around a bit (as any prospect should), there is a very good chance that he will end up in scarlet and grey. While the three superstars of the class (McCoy, Devlin, and Walls) are most likely headed elsewhere, the Buckeyes have a very good chance of signing versatile blue chip athlete Dorin Dickerson, who would be a major addition to the class of 2006. Dorin seems to like Ohio State quite a bit, and the Bucks should be a major player for his services. Ohio State also has a decent shot at LB Jeremiha Hunter, but the Bucks currently trail arch rival Michigan; this battle could get interesting, but Ohio State definitely has to make up some ground, as Hunter has been a Michigan fan for quite a while. RB Travis McBride has stated that Ohio State is his leader, despite the fact that he does not have an offer from the Buckeyes. Even with super blue chipper Chris Wells already in the fold, the Bucks would like to sign a second running back in this class, and McBride could get a look down the road. In the mean time, Ohio State will continue to pursue national RB recruits like LeSean McCoy, Stefon Johnson (California), James Aldridge (Indiana), Javarris James (Florida), and Josh Adams (North Carolina). With Wells being The Man in the Bucks' class of 2006, most of the top RB prospects will probably drop OSU from serious contention, which might leave an opening for a solid player like McBride. If he could land an offer from the Buckeyes, OL Chris Hanna would likely become very interested in Ohio State. However, an offer may be difficult to come by, as OSU already has rides pending to in-state stars Justin Boren, Aaron Brown, and Connor Smith, each of whom has been rumored to be a Buckeye lean. If all three of the Ohio studs would commit to the Bucks, then Hanna would become just one of many prospects (including Ohioans Lee Tilley, Chris Meenan, Cory Palmer, Ryan Palmer, Bryant Browning, Bill Nagy, Clark Crum, Chad Schofield, Joe Thomas, Jake Ballard, and Mark Jackson) competing for the final slot in Ohio State's OL class. Personally, I would like to see the Buckeyes begin recruiting Tom McEowen, as he is an underrated player with surprising athleticism and attitude to spare.

The top player overall in the state is probably McCoy, but a guy real close would be a QB named Pat Bostic in the 07 class. He's the closest thing you'll find to Mark Sanchez. He is a better prospect than both Devlin and Frazer.

Tom McEowen is being recruited by Ohio State and I heard they have given a verbal to him. He ran a 4.9 forty at the elite combine in NJ and amazed the recruiters with how fast and athletic he was. his broad jump was 9.5 Also nobody could contain him during the one on one's. He now holds offers from PSU, Georgia, Maryland, BC, Rutgers, NU, Virginia, NC. WV, Pitt, Akron, Minnesota, his coach has said he is up to 16 altogether so far.
