Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

2:35 left in the game, Iowa down 13-16 against Mich St. Iowa at the 20 yard line, 4th down and just under a yard to go. Kick a short field goal and you tie and go to overtime, or try it on fourth down. Ferentz goes for it...and they fail....and lose...and he collects another huge paycheck.

Ferentz would have trouble getting recruits to come to Iowa, so he plays at quite a talent disadvantage. Iowa was happy with Hayden Fry and 7-5 for a long time.

Still, I bet someone in their administration gags every month when he signs that paycheck.

On an earlier drive before the TD, he elected to go for it on 4th down instead of a 43 yard field goal. The score was 16-6 with about 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Have to take the points when you can.

Idiot.

That was just dumb. If it's on the 1 yard line MAYBE you take the gamble, but even if he gets it at the 20 they still haven't scored a point. The wise choice at that spot was the FG.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has dismissed speculation he might be a candidate for the Notre Dame job, saying he's content coaching the Hawkeyes.

Ferentz called it inappropriate Wednesday to comment on whether he's been contacted by Notre Dame officials, adding that what the school does is its business.

Ferentz has been routinely mentioned for a number of high-profile jobs during his 11 seasons at Iowa. But Ferentz says he's not a "vagabond coach" and pointed to his longevity with the Hawkeyes in response to questions about whether he'd consider the Notre Dame job.

Translation: "I got a sweet deal right here."

pointed to his longevity with the Hawkeyes
... pointed to the fact he can continue picking up 3M+ a year as long as he wins 10 games just once every four-year recruiting cycle while keeping any of his players from murdering or raping either the atheletic director or university president, because they've gotten away with everything else in Iowa City ...

Did ND even express interest in Ferentz? The Iowa fans are going crazy over the way he's "turned down ND". Seems kind of silly since his name isn't Stoops, Meyer, Kelly, or Patterson.

I told the old lady I turned down Jessica Alba.

She just laughed.

Tells me she is smarter than the average Iowa fan.

Personally, given the situation, the advantages, disadvantages of Iowa vs the rest of the Big 10 I think he may be the best coach in the conference, maybe a step behind or ahead of Pat Fitzgerald.

I don't say this as a slam on Tressel, but he has enormous advantages in money, facilities, lots of in state high school talent and history at his disposal. It's reflected in his style of play, counting on superior talent to eventually prevail in most of the games his team will play in any given season. It's simply a realistic view -- the same one Woody and Bo used to great advantage.

He did seem to wait until ND started contacting coaches before affirming his love for Iowa.

My phone's not ringing? Time to say I wouldn't want that job.

For a period of time Hayden Frey had Iowa above OSU consistently in the B10 and on the National scene during Earle's tenure and the early part of Coopers. Currently Dick Rod has taken a program with all the same advantages you list for OSU and run it into the ground.

I'm no blind Tressel homer but I am starting to take exception with this school of thought, at least as far as the B10 is concerned, that Tressel only wins because of the supposedly huge built in advantage OSU gives anyone who coaches it as far as resources and recruiting goes.

Coaching matters and to use the quote, you are what your record says you are. Jim Tressel started in 2001 and just won his 6th B10 title. KF started in 1999 and just had his 6th winning season in B10 play and catches zero heat for all the off field stuff that goes on out there.

All due respect but fuck Kirk Ferentz, self promotion is his strong suit and I can't stand guys who manufacture their own rep.

Agreed. Tressel wins because he is VERY GOOD at what he does.

this is the line of thinking that usually leads to Coach of the Year awards.....in all sports.

I think it's total crap. Who is to say Ferentz could do what Tressel does with OSU's resources? Who is to say Tressel can't do better than Ferentz with Iowa's? Just because you don't expect it from Iowa, doesn't mean what OSU does is easier.

Using your train of thought here, no coach at Ohio State can ever be considered the best coach in the conference.
