Lose some weight if you can to take extra stress off that knee. That's what I've been told by people who have had knee repair. And by their orthopediest.
My knee surgeon is the official knee surgeon for the Springboks and the England Olympic team. The first thing he said to me was to maintain my weight and don't allow the inactivity to add kilograms.

If you get your meniscotomy (?), ask your doc to scrape out any arthiritis crystals he might find. DO YOUR EXERCISES during recovery. Get the whole knee replaced, not a partial (others may object, but more problems with partials). Give up tennis - the side to side spurts puts too much stress on knee. Doc said go ahead and play, you'll be back in to see me sooner that way. Walking is best exercise (never liked running), and yes, the less weight, the longer you'll have the knee. Had mine at 63, and was youngest in recovery. Doc said I'd need another knee (in my 80), but we'll see. Good luck, get a GOOD ortho, and a GREAT physical therapist. Check that. Get the best for both. Good luck. PM if want advice, reads like we've got a healthy contingent of those who've been under the knife.

Best meth is behind Rural King. Back where the live chickens are. Ask for Kevin. You'll know him when you see him.

But lets face it, there's so much meth competition in South Zanesville, you really can't go wrong now can you?
Kevin sells the finest Y Bridge Ice I've ever seen, but the White Cottage Crank is where it's at.

Had an ACL reconstruction in 2004, I was 30 at the time. I was fortunate to draw Dr. John Bergfeld to do the surgery, Cleveland Clinic, Ortho to the Browns and Cavs at various times. One of the developers of ACL surgery. I had a Patella graft and it's been great. Sounds like you have some pretty good docs looking at you as well so that's good.

Most of my pain came from the associated meniscus damage, I was told. Probably took me about a year to get almost back to normal, but I'm no athlete. It was probably 2 years before I was jogging on it again. I did gain about 30 lbs after the injury.

Meniscus surgery is obviously much less intrusive so recovery would be faster. I think they do a pretty good job of that these days and the arthroscopic imaging (I do optical design on surgical instruments) is very good these days, leveraging the good image sensors from the phone industry.

These days I actually get more soreness from the other knee, probably from over compensating here and there over the years. I've had no issues with the repaired knee and I'm pretty active in competitive sailing which requires a lot kneeling and bending on an unstable surface.

So, Dude's knee went into the MRI machine.

And the answer was..........

BONE. MARROW. CONTUSION.

Now, after the momentary "oh fuck" gasp when I heard the words, "bone marrow" it turns out that there will be no surgery, no cortisone shots, no physical therapy.......just time. Another month, and I can go back to the gym, and I'll be playing squash before Harbaugh goes 0-5.

Well, it's been over two months. Knee is still giving occasional pops and stabs of pain, which the Doc said is normal while the bone heals and the abscess fills out with marrow. Fortunately, I've been maintaining a strict Gin & Vermouth regimen to keep the knee limber. I'll see the Doc again next week, and if the internal swelling hasn't gone down, I'm on crutches for 10 days.
