In some basketball news, Ohio State sent out a new offer to a point guard from the class of 2016. 6'5", 170-pound Kobi Simmons picked up an offer from the Buckeyes as the number one prospect from the state of Georgia continues hauling in the majority of the big name schools.

The five-star Simmons holds offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas, LSU, Marquette, Memphis, Mississippi State, Missouri, N.C. State, Texas Tech, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and is receiving plenty of interest from Kentucky and Duke.

As of now, it seems Kentucky and Kansas are the teams to beat for Simmons' services.

Thad Matta and assistants Dave Dickerson and Greg Paulus watched five-star point guard Kobi Simmons with the Atlanta Celtics on Saturday in Indy. Simmons, a five-star prospect, is rated the No. 9 overall player in 247Sports composite ratings and has a who's who of college programs after him as you'd imagine.

Every top program in the country watched the same game Matta and his staff watched on Saturday. Matta had an in-home visit with Simmons last week.

"I'm their biggest recruit, I believe, that's what they told me," Simmons said when I asked him about his visit with Matta. Simmons hears that from everyone, but it's interesting he'd hear that from Ohio State after Potter committed and took the last spot in 2016.

This is exactly the type of recruitment Matta never wins. 5-star recruit going up against the blue bloods in recruiting a guy from another region. Not one time has OSU won a recruiting battle like that. Might as well move to Plan B now.

2016 BASKETBALL PROSPECT KOBI SIMMONS HEARING FROM OHIO STATE OFTEN IN RECRUITMENT

When three-star center Micah Potter decided to announce his allegiance to Thad Matta and Ohio State, it appeared the head coach of the Buckeyes put the finishing touches on his next recruiting class.

Not so fast.

Though it appears Ohio State's available scholarships will be exhausted due to 2016 commitments Potter and Derek Funderburk, Matta's been staying in touch with the nation's second-ranked point guard, Kobi Simmons.

I think Thad WILL take a guard in this class. Simmons would be at the top of his wishlist, and some say UK is slipping which puts tOSU in a much better position.

I imagine they feel that at least one player that is projected to return for 16-17 will not. May well be the 3rd string C, whomever that is, with Potter and Funderburk ( though he is likely to play the stretch-4 primarily ) coming in would be superfluous. Or maybe they think Lyle or someone else will blow up and go pro early after this year.

With Thad's history of a lot of unexpected early departures he/they may well just presume someone will be gone and take a 14th guy. It is a pretty safe bet not all 14 would return anyway. Thad has done it twice before, now is a pretty good time to risk it!

Well yes, there seems to be a couple folks who feel OSU's chances with Simmons improved recently, to the level that they pick OSU as the destination for him. Still I think he's KY's if they want him, maybe his play lately at times hasn't been quite as good as what Calipari is looking for. But certainly OSU is in a good spot if KY is cooling on him.
