Second this. Unbelievable feat and Snyder has now officially hit superstar status if he had not already. If he can repeat at the Olympics, it would just be incredible. Just blows my mind that he accomplished this at age 19 and it was such an exciting much to watch with a ton of action. That Olympic redshirt has already been justified with this victory. And that last low single was just absolutely SICK. Congrats to Kyle, way to represent your country and the Buckeyes!

World Team member Kyle Snyder to take Olympic redshirt at Ohio State next year

Kyle Snyder, shown scoring a takedown at the 2015 Beat the Streets Gala dual in Times Square, will take an Olympic redshirt at Ohio State in 2015-16.

Kyle Snyder, a Big Ten and NCAA runner-up as a true freshman last season for the Ohio State wrestling team, will take an Olympic redshirt in 2015-16 as he trains for the Summer Olympics in Rio. Snyder will have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns in 2016-17.

“Kyle is the first collegiate athlete in NCAA history to win the U.S. Open and make the World Team as a freshman,” said head coach Tom Ryan. “The best chance for him to win an Olympic gold medal is to spend this season building his strength and freestyle skill. Traveling overseas will be critical for Kyle as well.”

“After discussing this with Coach Ryan and his staff, we are all in agreement this is the best thing for me,” said Snyder. “I’ve always dreamed of competing in the Olympics and to now have the opportunity to chase that goal is exciting. I came to Ohio State because I knew I could get a great education, compete for titles and prepare myself for Olympic-level wrestling. While I will miss wrestling in front of our fans at St. John Arena this season, I look forward to being back and better than ever in 2016-17.”

WORLD CHAMPION: 19-year-old Kyle Snyder becomes youngest gold medalist in U.S. wrestling history

19-year-old American Kyle Snyder captured a gold medal at the World Championships on Friday night at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas

Kyle Snyder is the youngest World champion in United States wrestling history.

And the 19-year-old may be here to stay for a good long while.

Snyder capped an incredible and improbable run by earning a gold medal at the World Championships before a raucous sellout crowd of 7,000 fans Friday night at the Orleans Arena.

Snyder turned in a superb performance in knocking off returning World champion Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia 5-5 on criteria in the gold-medal freestyle match at 97 kg/213 lbs.

"It just feels really good," Snyder said. "It felt like all the hard work I put in paid off. Wrestling is not a sport where you can just go to practice and not think about it for the rest of the day. I think about wrestling constantly.

"A lot of time goes into something like this. Guys like Gadisov and other guys in my bracket are a big reason why I am where I am today. I appreciate them, and I know without them pushing me to be better, I wouldn't be where I am."

Snyder won by virtue of scoring on a pair of two-point moves to one two-point move for Gadisov.

Snyder, a 2013 Junior World champion, is now the youngest World medalist and finalist in U.S. men’s freestyle history. He was wrestling in his first Senior World Championships.

Snyder Stuns Gadisov for 97kg Crown at Wrestling World Championships

Kyle SNYDER (USA) snapped up a late takedown and held on for a 5-5 win on criteria Friday evening to claim the freestyle 97kg crown at the Senior Wrestling World Championships.

Snyder, the 2013 junior world champion, snagged the foot of defending champion Abdusalam GADISOV (RUS) for a 5-4 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the day’s finale at The Orleans Arena.

He then shrugged off a penalty for fleeing to win by having scored two 2-point techniques to Gadisov’s one.

Ohio State wrestler Kyle Snyder becomes youngest world champion in United States history

It was just over six months ago that Kyle Snyder walked off of the mat at the NCAA wrestling tournament filled with disappointment. He had just lost the national final and the loss came in spectacular fashion. A lesser wrestler might have fallen into a rut. He might have allowed in the loss to stick with him for a few months. It would have been perfectly understandable. That's not what Snyder did, though. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he got back to work. Now just a half of a year later, the 19-year-old Snyder is the youngest world champion in the history of American freestyle wrestling.

Competing against the best against the world, Snyder never appeared overwhelmed or anxious. He appeared prepared. Heading into the final, Snyder's first match was his closest of the tournament, a 2-1 win over Pablo Oliinyk of Ukraine. He would follow that up with 8-0 and 11-1 wins over Poland's Radoslaw Baran and Venezuela's Jose Diaz respectively. Snyder earned his spot in the finals when he beat Iran's Abbas Tahran 6-3 in a thrilling semifinal.

Standing across from Snyder in the final was returning World Champion Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia. The Russian was the heavy favorite going into the match, but Snyder wasn't deterred. He fought Gadisov tooth and nail, trading takedowns and pushouts with the 26-year-old Russian, and ultimately prevailing by criteria (5-5 final score).

At the age of 19 Kyle Snyder has earned the right to call himself the best 97kg wrestler in the world. He is the youngest American freestyle wrestler (at any weight) to be able to say that. The scary part is, with his decision to sit out the 2015 Ohio State wrestling season to prepare for the 2016 Olympics, you can't help but feel like he's just getting started.

Snyder, ranked 15th in the world, shocked defending world champ Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia, 5-5 (criteria), in the 97 kilo/213-pound freestyle final at sold-out Orleans Arena.

How did Snyder win world championship at age 19, just 15 months after graduating from high school?

"I attribute that to my parents,'' he said. "They raised me the right way. They taught me that if you work hard and make the right decisions, and you're hungry enough for something, do everything you can to get it. I believe in them.''

Snyder, from Woodbine, Maryland, is the youngest men's wrestling finalist Team USA has ever had, and the gold medal caps a remarkable rise through the world ranks since he was pinned in the NCAA Tournament final as a true freshman in March. He helped Ohio State win its first national championship, but his runner-up finish stuck with him.

"I wasn't going to walk off that mat without a goal medal,'' Snyder said. "When you feel pain like that, you never want to feel it again. I wasn't going to take second at nationals. I wasn't going to take second at Pan Am (Games) and I wasn't going to take a silver medal at worlds. That was not going to happen.''

OHIO STATE'S KYLE SNYDER CLAIMS SPOT ON UNITED STATES WRESTLING TEAM FOR 2016 OLYMPICS IN RIO

Kyle Snyder is headed to Rio.

Seven months after the Ohio State sophomore became the youngest World Champion in USA Wrestling history, and a mere weeks after capturing an NCAA Championship at heavyweight, Snyder clinched a spot as a member of the United States contingent for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he'll represent Team USA at 97kg.

Snyder topped reigning Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner in a best-of-three encounter, rallying to win the final two matches. It was the first time since 1988 that a reigning Olympic Champion faced a reigning World Champion at team Olympic trials.

After Varner won the first match 4–4 on criteria, Snyder forced the tie-breaker with a 4–0 victory in the second match.

The legend of Ohio State sophomore wrestler Kyle Snyder is Bunyanesque, and he's only 20. He took another swing at wrestling history and chopped down more tall timber Sunday, winning the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials and earning a berth in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Snyder, the reigning World champion, defeated 2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner in the 97 kg/213-pound freestyle final in Iowa City, Iowa. Snyder lost the first match, 4-4 on criteria, but stormed back to beat Varner in the next two matches, 4-0 and 6-1.

OHIO STATE'S KYLE SNYDER TRAINING HARD, AIMING FOR GOLD IN RIO

Kyle Snyder already accomplished so much in the last 365 days, an NCAA title and world championship to his name. But there’s one final medal out there for the Ohio State sophomore wrestler to grab; the biggest of them all.

Olympic gold.

Snyder worked toward this opportunity for quite some time now, and since qualifying for the Olympics back in April, he has worked out two, sometimes three times per day at Ohio State with one goal in mind.

“I’ve been preparing for it for a long time so I’m just excited to put it on the line, put all my work on the line,” Snyder said Tuesday. “I’m excited to show everybody how hard I’ve worked and prove to myself that I’m the best wrestler in the world.”

Snyder took the wrestling world by storm last fall when he became the youngest United States world champion ever, winning gold at just 19 years old. He planned to take a redshirt year as a sophomore at Ohio State to train for the Olympics but burned that roughly halfway through the Buckeyes’ season to help the team pursue a second-straight national title while also going for an individual crown.

Snyder went 11-0 for Ohio State last season, and while the Buckeyes did not claim a team title — Penn State won the national title; Ohio State finished third — Snyder won an NCAA crown at heavyweight by defeating two-time champion Nick Gwiazdowski of NC State.

After that, Snyder went on to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials where he defeated 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Jake Varner, to earn his spot on the American team heading to Rio next month.

Buckeyes head wrestling coach Tom Ryan is constantly in awe.
